Computer help!

I had a virus attack a short while ago, and when I cleaned it, I got a notice saying some critical windows files had been deleted, and now I can’t connect to the internet.
I tried running DOS and pinging the other 2 computers on my network, and I get an error message regarding my IP driver. I’ve also seen notices that my computer cant find my network addapters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a mess, either restore the mising files or rerun windows over the top of it.

There’s a command you can use to restore all “vital” windows files. You need to OS cd and to find that command, I can’t recall what it is right now though. It’s something you type in a command prompt window…

Thanks so far guys. Unfortunately, I havent got the windows CD I need. The only one I’ve got is from a few years ago, and I can’t seem to install it because it’s an older version.
I’m running WinXP Home service pack 2.
I tried a system restore, to no avail.

Yeah you can’t do squat without that Operating System disk. You would need to make a system disk with format utilities on it so that you could get rid of that partition which is a non fat partition (NTFS7).

You will either need to buy an XP disk or take it to a shop where they will make you buy one ~sighs~. Sorry man it looks like there is no cheap way out of this if restore doesn’t work.

In the future you might want to buy an external hard drive and Norton Ghost and keep a full backup because windows recovery is crap ~sighs~.

Good luck!

Actually, I fixed it this morning! Thanks for your help guys, but I looked thru a bunch of boxes in my attic and actually found my Windows cd. My main computer is back up on the net again.

Again, thanks for your help guys. It’s much appreciated.

Ad aware, SpyBot Search and destroy, and Trend Micro’s free virus scan (on their site) are all helpful things to avoid future problems.
