life help: What do you do when you don’t know what to do? - Help.com

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?

My education is going well. I have hobbies and am interested in many things but still most days and nights i’m just sitting here wondering what to do with myself.
Do you think it’s important to have a definitive direction in life or just sort of go with the flow?

Both for me, in certain areas of my life I am very laid back and go with the flow, in other areas of my life I have to lotus up and move forward or else the stagnation or back tracking makes me crazy within myself ~smiles~.

When I get bored and don’t know what to do with myself I clean something ~laughs~. Yeah I know slightly retarded, but it works for me and gets my mind off that nagging in the back of my head telling me I’m bored and need to do something ~chuckles~.

I agree with you ,OccultPizz, in that i should force myself to do things instead of just doing nothing. Even if you don’t enjoy it, it makes you feel more usefull.

It depends really on what you want. I have seen people having prescheduled goals since they were at your age and have had very favourable outcomes, I have met with people (like me) who just go with the flow and still have had good results from what they did. In both cases make sure you keep your eyes and mind open! New opportunities will be around for you to grab! Always be yourself and choose for yourself. Never do sth just because others did unless you want to.

Broad goals are a good idea to help you stay focused on at least a direction to go. Some short term and some long term goals are good as well. Short term - learn a second language or take up an instrument. Do you have a public library? learn to speed read and set a goal to read X-number of books in a week, month, year. If where you live offers free classes - take them to broaden your horizons with little to no out-of-pocket expence. Do NOT sit and worry if you need to be doing something, if you’re worried about it then you need to do something - anything. Your life will come at you fast enough so don’t rush anything and back yourself into a corner. You have the rest of your life to get “whatever” done so take your time and do it right. Good Luck.

Thank you.
Learning instruments and languages, short term though? These are things that keep going and develop over a lifetime.
The speed reading idea is intriguing though. Can you actually learn to speed read? At the moment it takes me ages to read even a short book and it’s annoying. Speed reading would be realy helpfull. I’ll look into it.

Yeah, I see instuments and languages as short term because the initial time investment is much more involved in sorting out the basics. As you get better you spend your time honing your skills not working out the basics. It becomes more a part of your life that you can set down for a week or two and pick it up again without having to start over from the beginning. Plus you may go through several different ideas until you find a couple that you really like - those will become a part of your life.
As for speed reading, I understand that is something that can be taught. But you can also develop your natural abilities by just pushing yourself to read more and more. I never took a class but I can go through a book pretty fast - public libraries are wonderful because the selection is almost endless and the cost is nominal at most. My wife and I belong to the local library plus a book exchange where we can take our old books and trade them in for credit to off set the cost of buying other people’s used books, usually a couple bucks at most. lol, how I do go on.

There are a million things you can do and a million excuses for not doing them. One thing I feel in my own life is inertia. When I am sitting I tend to remain sitting. When I am active I tend to remain active. It will take energy to pick something to do and act on it, but once you get started it will be easier to keep going.

Not bad, Jim!
You can waste a lot of time doing nothing and you could have achieved a lot during the same time. But you also need rest, the trick is to stop resting.

You don’t live your life on a goal, you spend your time on the road towards a goal. Once you are there, you will feel lost if you have not set another goal.

So, set fair short-time goals and have a short rest while you are there, and then get up towards the next… It doesn’t hurt to have one long-term goal as well, the others being on the road.

But don’t let it become a fixed idea, be open for changes! If not, you will not be able to grab opportunities in the flight. Try to remain fairly conscious about what you are doing, then you’ll be fine!

Good advice all round!
I can think of some short term goals. I just need to set them out clearly and work towards them without getting distracted.
Thank you everyone.

Guitar, The main thing is, focus on WHAT YOU WANT, Your thouhts are very powerful and what you focus on YOU will create. The ONLY true love is the love for self. Be always thankful for what you have, and not, of need for what you think you don’t have. Be careful of what you ask for. When you are JUST sitting, close your eyes, go within, ask! ok, what do I do now. Then be ready to listen and DO THAT. There is NO THING outside of YOU. Everything in your experience is YOU, teaching YOU, something about YOU.
In light love and peace. Robert
