“Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.” I am getting this error everytime I try to copy or delete any file or shortcut within windows explorer. This was after installing automatic updates. Anybody know of any recently released updates from Microsoft that jacks up explorer.exe or drwatson32.exe?

Problem is, I’m still running XP. It’s a new installation of SP2 and the problem surfaced after downloading all the patches microsoft had posted. I guess I’ll revert back to just a stripped down install of XP and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies.

The striped down version of XP is worse. It has a lot more bugs then SP2. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microdata wasn’t adding bugs to XP to make people move to Vista! I have noticed strange problems pop up after each update. Someone said “upgrade = old bugs out, new bugs in!”

To the person with Windows Explorer problems - Make sure that you have run your defrag program. If you have a corrupted file it will not defrag. File check has to be done before boot. Also try rebooting as the item you want to delete may be still busied out. I have noticed lately that file locks are not being cleared properly.

Good luck Ron

Issue resolved. It was registry corruption. It looks like it was caused by a bad IE7 install. Removing IE7 didn’t help (the issue actually got worse). Anyway, it’s all good now (after formating and spending 4 hours getting all my software installed).

Anyway, thanks everyone.
