scared help: I’m scared. - Help.com

I’m scared.

I have these medical issues and the doctors don’t know what’s wrong with me. At least they aren’t telling me anything. All they say is that they need to run some tests to pin point what it is. I had a kidney infection. After 3 days of antibiotics I was still in a lot of pain. So my doctor told me to go to the hospital for an ultrasound. They did a ct scan. No stones (thank GOD). But they found that my spleen is enlarged and there are lesions on my bones. So now I had some more blood work done (results will be back later this week). And I’m waiting for the insurance company to approve a bone scan and a more in-depth ct scan. Part of me is saying that I’m going to be ok. The other part is scared. That’s the part that is winning right now. I know I shouldn’t worry. That I should wait until we know more. But I can’t help it. I want to see my kids grow up. I want to play with my grandkids. I want to travel the world with my husband when we retire. I’m being stupid, I know. I’m just scared.

At least you are seeing doctors & finding out what is wrong… I read an interesting article recently that stated people who question their doctors & listen properly to what they are saying are much mroe likely to recover from illnesses than those who listen to the minimum & stick their head in the sand so good for you getting all these tests…

Thanks.
I wish that there is a machine that you can go in that scans your whole body and tells the doctors exactly what is wrong with you. That would be great. Instead of going through all these tests. It’s no wonder I’m slightly anemic, they keep taking my blood.

Wow… 4 kids…
I’m only 28 so don’t have years of life experience (as you may have gathered from my post-thanks for the reply by the way) but I know several people who have been quite sick, many with cancer, and it seems that the people who keep a positive outlook definitely manage better…
That is not to say I am assuming you are ill but if you are I think it definitely helps to stay positive not only for you but also for your children so that they too learn to be positive about things…
Not sure that’s helpful or not but just my thoughts on it..

I do agree.
My mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer 7 years ago. They told her she had 3 months to live. 7 years later she’s still kickin’ strong. She took the attitude of “I’ve lived a long good life. If I go then I go. But for now I will enjoy the time I have left”. And that’s what she did. She amazed the doctors. They still don’t understand how she is still alive.
My father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago. They told him he could live for years with treatment. He died 6 weeks later. He freeked out. Got depressed.
Just goes to show what positive thinging and lack of fear of death can do.

By the way, I’m only 31. I had my first daughter very young.

Ah….well then you know exactly what I am talking about.. .
It is amazing that the effects of a positive attitude can be so ovious; would make you want to shake the negative nellies into action…
Once again, wow… funny I can’t imagine having kids at 28 and you’ve got one who is 16…. You are obviously a well grounded person… Do you mind my asking what you thnk might be making you ill?

I don’t know what it is. I’m hopeing that the spleen thing is just from the infection I had and will go away when the infection is gone.
The bone thing is a little concerning. I have no idea what that could be.

Thank Raj. My friends tell me the same thing but it’s easier said then done.

My husband is the one that is keeping my positive about all this. He’s been great. He doesn’t let me get down. He keeps telling me that everything is going to be ok. It helps. The hugs help too.
The insurance company I use isn’t that bad. They have been fairly quick in the past. We’ll see.

Thanks everyone. I appritiate it. You guys are the best.

I just got off the phone with the doctor’s office. They said they should have the results by Thursday on the blood work. And they will call me as soon as the insurance company oks the scans. They are going to get so sick of me. I have no patients when it comes to this.

Hi DoubleO!

Lol, I was going to say something supportive but found myself simply forgetting the things which were supposed to be supportive…
The thing is that I have sometimes had kidney pains because of infection, but I really can’t remember what caused it. But I remember that they were slightly enlarged (I could feel them from the outside) and I was told to drink more water.
I would certainly have remembered if it was anything serious.

Just keep your mood up, out of hundreds of possible reasons, most of them are no big deal to cure. But meanwhile, the pain sucks.

Anyway DoubleO,

I’m thinking about you and I worry of course, but the fact remains that our bodies often are very good in telling us when something is wrong, while it most often isn’t something serious. And when it is, it is most often something easily curable.

So let’s wait for the test results while concentrating on other stuff. I think you haven’t told me what you are working with?

working with meaning job? I’m a SQL DBA (database administrator). I work for an insurance/reinsurance company. I like it. Always learning new things. Which is important to me. Doing the same thing everyday would be so boring.

One of the things the doctor tested me for (results come back at the end of the week) is not curable. It’s treatable. I hope that’s not it because I don’t want to be on medication for the rest of my life.

OK O+O,
But the doc testing for it isn’t bad, that is good. It would be worse if he did not test for it, wouldn’t it? So let’s still wait and see.

I have an interactive course on SQL Databases (actually two). But I never found the time to do them, such a waste of money!

I fully agree with you on the learning new thing stuff. Throughout my life, whenever finding myself doing the same things everyday I look for ways to automatize it, make new routines or whatever so I will not have to do it. That has actually meant developing a lot of creating things.

Hehe, that has also made myself surplus in some cases. But the day was always saved by myself having a suggestion on what to do instead, because the moneymakers like when stuff is rationalized. In your field there is a lot of possibilities for a creative mind!

I am lucky to have really good doctors that leave no stone unturned. Testing is important. I just have no patience to wait for the results. I want them now!!!

For me, doing is learning. I didn’t take any formal classes on SQL before I started working with it. My boss at the time needed a sql person because the crazy man that was doing it up and quit. So my boss turns to me and tells me to go to the book store, get a sql book, and read it quickly. He said he needed this, this, and this done by the end of the week. So I had no choice but to learn it. I ended up loving it.
By the time I did take a sql class I was correcting the instructor’s mistakes. it was funny (for me anyway).

So in your case you made it a priority for that week. I guess it has to be. My problem is that I want too much at the same time, so I try to make shortcuts. It sometimes work but often not. In the SQL case it was just an idea and nothing I had to do. In the learning Russian case it was similar, but I guess that I wanted it much enough to spend the nights on it, because I did not have time during the days. So it worked.

Just now I have a crazy schedule. I really put priority in popping into ‘Help’, because it really takes me away for an hour every now and then. I made coffee Monday morning. Believe it or not, since then I have been to Istanbul in Turkey on a meeting and came back just four hours ago. I was lazy and poured up a cup of coffee… it was still luke-warm! It tells something both about my schedule and about communication (…and that I have a good thermos for my coffee, lol)

So I went to the doctor last night. He said that I have to retake one of the tests I took last weekend because the lab only does this test on Mon., Tues., and Wed. Why they didn’t tell me that when I was there - I was told the girl was new and didn’t know. But the other test came up a bit high. Not good. I asked the doctor what that means. He said he’s not sure yet. He’s anxious to see what the bone scan results are. I get that done later this week or early next week.
Then he threw out words like “lymphoma” and “tay-sachs”. Then says “I’m really not sure yet”. Why throw out scary words like that if you don’t know????

Hi DoubleO,
I agree with you, that it does not seem very professional to do so. But we will probably learn that there will be no problem, that you’ve got something that is easily medicated away.
Is everything OK with other members of your family? No infections and so on?

I’ll go home from work now, but I’ll log in again within an hour or two.

I was told that they are taught to go for the worst case. I understand why. They don’t want to tell you it’s nothing to worry about then when all the test come in they say you have 2 months to live. Lots of lawsuits and shock.

Anyway, no - nothing in my family like this. My dad has mutliple myeloma but that’s not heritery (spelled wrong). He got that from 30 years of working with acid. He’s a diamond cutter.
Other then diabietes there isn’t anything else in my family history.

OK.
A lot of the bad stuff is inherited through genetics, so your family’s medical history also calls for you to not be too scared.

But one thing that irritates me is that doctors often have a theory as soon as you walk into their room. So all their tests, everything they do is aimed towards proving their theory. So in the end, when all tests show negative, they loose their interest in you.
“Next patient, please”
And that is when they missed your broken leg, or something like that…

Oh, your father is a cutter? I did not even know that they work with acid. Is that for cleaning? I know some about the finished product, like qualities, or the difference between Tel Aviv and Amsterdam cuttings. But I don’t know much about the cutting procedure except that mistakes are expensive. I saw some of it being made with Stern in Rio. It looked very precise. Then he has a very difficult profession.

I not only have my doctor but I also have my general doctor (which won’t stop till he knows everything that is going on) and my dad’s doctor. Which knows my hemotologist because he covers for my dad’s doctor when he’s out. He’s been checking up with the my doctor to see what’s going on. He’s concerned about my dad because stress is no good for him. And my dad is so worried he hasn’t been sleeping. Again not good.
Anyway, yes my dad has been cutting diamonds since he was 14. The acid is for cleaning. It’s really neat. You need a steady hand for it. I use to go to work with my dad every summer when I was young. It was fun. Aaahh the good ol’ days.

Well there are two things. The one will not be told in public. The other thing is OK, it is my name’s day (in the Swedish calendar).

By the way, we don’t celebrate names’ days in Sweden. Maybe a “congrats” when passing, if somebody remembers. And with kids, maybe a sweet or a cookie.
But in some countries, e.g. Russia, it is much more important than a birthday.

Each day of the year honor a person’s name. Now there are a lot of names so it kind of devaluated, so each day has most often two names.

So today, 1/9, the names are “Regina” and “Roy”. This is common all over the world. In some countries, not only Russia but e.g. in Greece, this is more important than birthdays, including presents and the entire ballet…

However, I don’t think there is any with your first name in the Swedish calendar. But you possibly have another second name? The names are not similar in other countries’ calendars, but quite many are. I therefore believe that there is some kind of links between them.

My grandmother’s name was Ruth. When my cousin converted, she was kind of babtized again and needed a Jewish name, so she took that name. “Her day” is 4th January.

I am proud of my grandparents, I think they were a beautiful couple. They look so dark, but all relatives from them were blond.

Lol, I could easily have made that mud by myself. E.g. by finding a spoonful of really artificially-tasting fruit flavor (like the first cool-aid stuff), mixing it with 1 lb white plaster and 1 lb white ceiling paint… Eeeewwww….

I checked on Mazal, it wasn’t there. But there are many Biblic names, like Marcus, Moses, Abraham, Isreael, Ruth, Maria, Salomon, Simon and lots of other. Some Biblical names are really common in Sweden. My sons have the names Martin (Biblic but Latin origin), Marcus (Biblic but disputable origin, possibly also Latin) and Emanuel (entirely Hebrew).

But I really dislike what the “Swedish Academy” (upkeeper of the language) is up to. They changed that list three times during the 20th century. A day can have more than one name, that is OK. It is also OK to ADD names, as the “common names” slowly drift by immigration and other influences. But in many cases they have REMOVED names, or even moved them to another date. I personally don’t hold “Name’s Day” very high, but lots of “new Swedes” do, e.g. those coming from Greece or Russia. I would still regard it as an attack on my integrity if my name was removed, replaced by e.g. “Mohammed” (which I guess eventually will go into the list).

So what should a Greece mom say to her child?: “sorry, no more celebration because your name is gone…”

If the Swedish Academy wants to mess with that list, they may add names. But not remove or move any!

By the way, your second name (מזל טוב) should get you through this stress of yours!

I agree.

It doesn’t state whether it’s good or bad luck. Just luck.
But in combination with my first name (Orit - meaning little light), should help. Light is good - dark is bad. Right…

Thanks Jade. I’m ok. I had the ct scan and all the doctor is telling is that my spleen is enlarged and that they saw the “bone islands” that they saw on the original scan. Not sure what islands are doing in my body. :oP
Anyway, he wants to wait for the other blood test and the bone scan before figuring out what is wrong with me. We’ll see.
In the meantime, everyone on here has been great and I thank you all so much.
I’ve decided that I’m not going to let this get to me. I have a beautiful family and wonderful friends to live a long life for. So whatever this is - I can beat it.

Hi all. Got the results last night. The bone scan and blood work were neg. No cancer (yeay!)
Still don’t know what’s going on but now I can breath a little easier. I’m going to a orthopedic doctor on monday. My back and hip has been hurting pretty bad so he wants this other doctor to take a look.

Thank you all so much for your support. It has really meant a lot to me.

Hi DoubleO
I’m really happy for you! I have hardly had time to check in, but I’ve been thinking a lot about you (and yes, I was worried because you were a bit silent, too).
Love!

I can’t go anywhere anyway. We still have too much to do. And I still have to spoil any little nieces and nephews you give me.

don’t stress yourself out over something when you don’t even know for sure what the problem is. Take a deep breath . there that feels better right? now, I know its hard but you shouldn’t be scared. A lot of times doctors just want to be thorough. Even if something is wrong , that doesn’t mean you won’t be around for years to come. You can still see you kids and g4randkids grow up,and travel the world with your husband. So, take one day at a time and live life.

Thanks womaninhea.
I had an MRI done earlier this week. The orthopedic said I have 2 degenerated discs and that is what is causing me the back and hip pain. Which I can live with. There isn’t anything that can really be done. Once they stablize the pain should go away.
I have an appointment today with the hemotologist. Well see what he says.
