Gifts From The Heart

By - Michael Josephson

According to legend, a young man while roaming the desert came across a spring of delicious crystal-clear water. The water was so sweet he filled his leather canteen so he could bring some back to a tribal elder who had been his teacher. After a four-day journey he presented the water to the old man who took a deep drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student lavishly for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village with a happy heart.

Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat it out, saying it was awful. It apparently had become stale because of the old leather container. The student challenged his teacher: “Master, the water was foul. Why did you pretend to like it?”

The teacher replied, “You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an act of loving-kindness and nothing could be sweeter.”

I think we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent gifts of love from young children. Whether it’s a ceramic tray or a macaroni bracelet, the natural and proper response is appreciation and expressed thankfulness because we love the idea within the gift.

Gratitude doesn’t always come naturally. Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing given rather than the feeling embodied in it. We should remind ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of feelings and expressions of gratitude. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.

*gasp* I heard this a long tome ago, or a story much like, and it was very meaningful to me then. I remember the line “I tasted the gift.”

Thanks for reminding me of this. I still have a key fob my now sixteen year old son made for me in kindergarten. It is a simple strip of leather with DAD punched into it. A piece has broken off and the lettering is all but gone, but I still cherish it. I think my valuing of this tells my son something important.

Thanks for writing me as I am still learning how to use this website. I am just very scared for my brother and I. We don’t have our mother or father anymore and we are having trouble with paying our mortgage on our house. We both just got great jobs but just got a letter in the mail saying that we are going to lose our house since we are 6 months behind in payments. It just seems so unfair that right when we get jobs and can maybe turn this around that this has to happen. We need a little financial help to save our house. We can start paying in DEC 2007 since we both just got work at an insurance company and will be able to afford the payments now but it is not going to be in time. All we want is a chance to make it and we are soooo close. I hope someone out there that has the means can help us. I am really scared and feel like we are so close but yet so far to being o.k. with the roof over our head. Thanks for asking and for reading this. I just found this website today as I have no place else to turn.
