What are the side effects from fasting or not eating?
Many days I go without eating for up to 24 hours. I still drink water during this time, but i was wondering what are the most prevalent side effects from fasting?
For example, I tend to have to go to the toilet alot. normal?? abnormal?
PS: I have Type 2 Diabetes.

Doesn’t sound like a healthy thing to do if you have diabetes… If your body is denied food for a while, it will start to burn it’s reserves. Unfortunately, it doesn’t start with fats, but with stuff you actually need. You should have trouble focusing (concentrating), have faint spells, things like that. And be hungry, of course. Not all metabolisms need the same amount of food at the same rate, so for most people it is ok not to eat if they are not very hungry. On the other hand, this only goes for healthy people. A disease like diabetes might deteriorate from an unbalanced diet. I would ask your doctor about it to be sure.
Question though: why do you go without food?
I thought fasting was a good thing to do? i wasn’t expecting such concerned replies.
admittedly what I have read/researched says people who have diabetes probably shouldn’t fast, but it’s only for 24 hours, it’s not like I’m fasting for days and days at a time. and i realise that if you don’t eat for weeks at a time, you will die, that’s not what i am doing. these are short bursts of not eating.
why don’t I eat? basically some days I just feel like I can’t eat. i’m not hungry, the smell and look of food makes me feel sick so I drink juice or water.
i do tend to eat very well otherwise, and i don’t fast all the time, maybe once every 2 weeks.
hope that cleared it up a little more, perhaps I should have put in more details in my question.
Once every two weeks to feel sick seems quite often to me. Perhaps you should look in to why you don’t feel like eating? It might have something to do with your diabetes.
It depends on your weight and body fat, if you are extremely skinny you could be hurting yourself. When you fast your body immediately starts storing and eating fat reserves, if you have very little or no body fat you body will start devouring its own muscle. This generally takes longer than 24 hours, but if you do this regularly it could impact atrophe in your muscles.
Usually you will feel weak and/or lightheaded, sometimes you won’t notice this because you will be busy doing something, but if you stop and feel your body it will probably feel weaker. If sleep deprivation is compounded with fasting hallucinations gernally start within 24-48 hours. Free LSD trip! The Japanese do this all the time, at least the spiritual ones.
Other than that there really isn’t any adverse or long term affects from fasting. The potty issue is your body purging itself during a fast. It is normal, especially if you have any caffiene products floating around in your system.
Even in Buddhist and Christian times fasting was considered an extreme spiritual practices. It allowed people to see god (or so they say) and get edicts from their creator, as well as purge their body of poison build ups.
Drinking lots of water is awesome for fasting. You actually need a lot more water when you are fasting, but just sip it because while fasting your body can’t absorb more than a little trace amount of water every 10 minutes or so ~smiles~.
Most positive things related to fasting are based on religion and are perhaps healthy for your spirit/mind, but not for your body (even though a healthy body can take an occasional fasting). It is also a body’s natural reaction to minor poisoning and in such it could be wholesome to fast and let your body purge itself occasionally.
Just saw the diabetes things, so I am assuming you are overweight as that is a precursor to diabetes II. It doesn’t mean it is so, but usually, so it depends on how bad your diabetes is, if you are on injectables you definately need to keep an eye on your sugar/insulin levels, but other than that I am sure you doctor will say it is fine ~smiles~.
Fasting can be a way to center your body and rid it of many toxins if done the right way. Take a look a an Ayurvedic Fast on the internet to start as a good source.
You definitely should not ever fast with type 2 diabetes. Your body is already having a very hard time processing sugars and controlling insulin, don’t aggravate your problem even more. You really could end up losing your limbs or eyesight if you do not get your diabetes under control.
If you are fasting because you think there could be weight loss advantages, trust me that for someone with your health condition there are none. Your body will react to the lack of new carbohydrates and nutrients every time that you fast and it will not be to your benefit. You may even experience weight gain because you will condition your body to “hold on” to fats and carbs when you’re not eating to store up for when it feels deprived.
Please consult with your doctor for how you should be eating.
thats not healthy, consult a doctor
if your type 2 diabetes is related to
I have an infection in my intestines which has caused me to not eat. I can tell you that the following will happen:
1) You’ll become weak.
2) Quick temper.
3) Sleep a lot.
4) Dizziness
5) Fainting
Its not pleasant.
For those who are down playing fasting, saying that it is not good for you, have you done it? Or are you assuming it’s bad for you? So our body was designed to always have food, every three or so hours? There are times when I’ve fasted and didn’t feel good, so I stopped immediately, most of the time I’ve never felt better, most I’ve gone is 4 days, only water. Felt fantastic, you have to be careful when you break a long fast as not to put too much stress. Hint, don’t drink grape juice in breaking a long fast…too much of a rush…not a good feeling.
Hi I just turned 16 may 2.Im gonna do a 14 day water fast Im hoping to loose ten pounds? But at the same I dont wanna die or anything.
Not eating is very dangerous.
If you go without eating for long periods of time, your body will start to dip into the fat (glycogen) stores for nourishment and energy. The unfortunate thing about this, is that in these fat stores, it’s not just glycogen. There is also groups of chemicals called “ketones” which are harmful if are present in your body at high concentrations. When you get enough of these in your blood from your body breaking down the glycogen, you can end up with blood poisoning from the toxins. A form of this is called “ketosis”.
So kids, please eat your dinner.
I wonder, Izzy, if it could be that the man is doing this for religious purposes and not health. If this is so, you should lay off the comments about all this “Shouldn’t do it” stuff…if it is for Faith he should. I am.

Its fine. I did it for 48hrs and nothing happened. and doing it often is fine cuz ur body gets used to it. and diabetes has nothing to do with it, i mean as long as u still get ur injections then theres no problem. but u will definitly get a quick temper. i know i did.
