Love help: We recently relocated to another state and found a nice little simple apartment. - Help.com

We recently relocated to another state and found a nice little simple apartment.

Of course there have been severe maintenance issues, and I’ve tackled them one by one and have gotten things taken care of (SLOOOOOOOOWLY but surely)
Since the temperatures have been in the 100’s, of course we are going to use our Window AC unit more…
Over the past month our AC unit once the compresser kicked off leaving the fan to run would put out this Nasty, sick, nauseating smell, leaving me and our son lathargic, and yes nauseous, until the compresser kicked back in to regulate the temperature.
I had complained about this verbally and in writing. Finally this past Wednesday night my husband which works 2nd shift came home, and found both me and our son asleep, BUT WERE WE… He had trouble getting our son up yet put him in his room, and he said I talked to him sluggishly yet I don’t remember. When he came in the apartment was filled with this sweet odor too…
I went to the manager office in tears, and told her I was going to buy a poisoning kit… Needless to say I did get a new AC Unit, but we still do not know what that smell was… I would love to know what was causing this to happen if anyone knows please share your knowledge? Thank you…

WOW. I’m so glad you guys have a new AC unit!! The smell was probably a freon leak, which is VERY dangerous!

Or it could have been from mold. Either way, I’m glad you are ok.

Hmm. Doesn’t sound good. Small possibility of carbon tetrachloride if the AC unit is from the 70s (which seems unlikely). I seriously hope that’s not it since CCL4 is pretty bad stuff (banned from US consumer products in the 70s). Icky.

It probably has to do with the same sort of gas or whatever that leaks when your heater isn’t working properly. I’ve just looked it up and possibly it could have been a leak with the refrigerant leaking. The refrigerant displaces oxygen which would have been slowly suffocating you and your son. That may not be the case as I am not an air conditioning technician, but as I look up more it probably does have to do more with the actual compressor being bad. Unfortunately I am unable to find what exactly that is.

here are very few items that give off a dangerous odor. I would need to know if your a/c is old. All freon escaping will do is displace oxygen. The only real dangerous gas is when freon comes in contact with flame. The comp may have gone off from overload due to high head pressure, low charge, it is hard to say with out seeing the unit. I am happy they gave you another unit. Most odors are from mold in condinsation lines
