How many types of traders or services do you think might be available in a small town/village?

Like a pub or post office.
Long back story but I need to find out about a road sign in this village, so I thought if I phone the hairdresser or someone they might know or at least look out the window and tell me. Only I’ve tried looking up most places in the Yellow Pages and no luck, very small place I guess or I got no imagination, you got any ideas?

Call the police department or fire department. They would HAVE to know, right?

Good idea but no fire station within miles, er… 10-20 miles and they would probably think it kinda trivial.

What good are public servants if they aren’t willing to serve? :) (I actually would still give them a call. Those guys get fantastically bored sometimes, and they might be willing to exert a little effort for you.) If that fails, what about Google Maps?

Well, I want to know what the road sign says, or actually if there is one! I’m writing some rather intense road directions for someone. So maps are a non-starter really, well in this instance, I’ve been using it myself for guidance but persons travelling don’t do maps, more of a landmark type of person. }: [
Someone at the nearest Fire Station might drive past on their way home but I’d feel really weird asking them when they were next on shift and it’s not something they could bunk off (play hookey?) to do. Also now we have this new phone system here you have to phone Headquarters first to be put through to any local station. Thanks for the thought but things are just different ‘cross the pond.
