what is the answer to this math problem

mark layered 3 pieces of wood to build the base for a lamp. the pieces were 1/4 inch thick, 5/8 inch thick, and 3/16 inch thick. how thick was the base for the lamp

I won’t give you the answer, but I’ll help you figure it out. Those are all fractions. Make all of the bottom numbers (denomenators) the same by multiplying them to make 16(because that’s the largest). Don’t forget to multiply the top of the fractions by the same number as the bottom. Then add the top numbers together and reduce if needed.

(grr ken for posting while I’m writing it up, but I’m glad someone else has the same idea).

you can also change the fractions to decimals and then just add them up.

which is achieved by dividing the top number by the bottom number

ie.

1/4 = .250

5/8 = .625

3/16 = .1875

add them up = 1.0625 inches

4/16+10/16+3/16=17/16=1 1/16″
