Family help: Rats. - Help.com

Rats.

As I sit here typing, there is a rat making an infernal racket in my ceiling. I can’t get to it as I have no crawl space. It has a nest in my bedroom walls with who knows how many young. They squeal during the day when they think no one is home. I live in a very old house that has been in my husband’s family for three generations. We’ve plugged holes. They make new ones. We set traps. They set them off without actually getting caught in them. We try to never use poison because we have a pet cat and we also hate the smell of rotting rat flesh trapped in the walls. Short of major renovations to “rat-proof” the house, which aren’t possible, what can I do to encourage the nasty things to find another home?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

That’s a lot of money that will kill the ones that are here now, but not get rid of the problem. They’ll come back.

Thank you, though.

I know it. We finally got them to keep from coming up through the floor in the laundry room so I can do laundry without worrying about getting droppings on the clean stuff. But when I kill them, more just take their place. It’s almost enough to make me want to burn the house down!

Isn’t there a repellant or high frequency gadget that can scare them away?

I found something on google that is supposed to smell like foxes and scare them away, but that doesn’t really sound realistic to me, especially since this isn’t really fox territory. I don’t think local rats would be afraid of that particular smell.

The best thing to do is get rodenticide and clog up the visible holes with cooper wool. This is what is done in NYC.

do you have fruit trees? Rats generally stay for a food source. Fruit trees are a great food source for them. Make sure there are no rotting fruits on the ground… they love those… make sure your cat food is in a tightly sealed metal container, like a small garbage can, and when feeding the cat give only a small amount. The food hoppers that hold a weeks worth of food for cats and dogs are convenient, but the rats love em too! Make sure that your garbage can’s close tightly and are metal. Rats can chew into plastic containers. Finally, if it was me (and it has been), use poison. Yes, the smell can be unbearable for a few weeks, burn lots of incense, but in the end it is worth it.

Here in the UK there is this thing out now, it plugs into the wall (plug socket) and it builds upover a few days a very deep vibration through all the wallsin the house that humans cannot hear but mugs and smallrodents can hear and don’t like, within about a week your rats will have moved out and also it has no effect on cats, it costs about £20 which is I think about $40 ish but its worth it

teeheehee poor rats :) (ty Cookies for the invite) Richard had a lot of good suggestions … make sure food its tucked away tightly and the trash cans are not easy to get in to. If you do have edible fruit trees and stuff near your house make sure it is all picked up. You wont be able to get everything coz rats will also eat bugs - they eat both meat and veg. I have 2 of the cutest baby pet rats so know they are very difficult and quick :D another good suggestion is perhaps a humane trap. Obv the rat traps you have been using are easy to figure out (rats are very clever) try a trap that does not kill the rat, bait it with cheese and tomato or if you have any burger relish, drop the rat off way out in the wild. The rats will stick to the edges of the walls or live in any thing they can get in so make sure all holes are closed. I would never suggest Poison - it could hurt your cat, it is also a pretty nasty way to die and could spread to other animals if they eat the dead rat. Also if it does die in your walls you would have an awful smell :S Good Luck

Thanks everyone. We don’t have any fruit trees so that is not attracting them. We live in the woods. The cat food does already stay in a container except for what I feed him twice a day. I’m not sure where they get all the food that attracts them except for the one peach that I found half eaten on the shelf a couple of mornings ago because I left it out to ripen. Otherwise, I don’t even leave bread out on the shelf because they chew through the bag.

I would love to get my hands on one of those electronic devices. I haven’t found one yet, but I will definitely keep looking.
