life help: I’ve never been religious, but now I feel like I want to believe, but I can’t. - Help.com

I’ve never been religious, but now I feel like I want to believe, but I can’t.

I feel happier when I tell myself that there is a God who is watching over me, and making sure my life turns out okay, but then I just feel like I’m fooling myself into thinking something that doesn’t exist. Advice? Comments?

The best advice i can give you, is even when u think ur fooling urself ur not pray to him out loud or even just in ur head, I know i know it seems odd the first few times, but tell hm ur happiness praise him for all he has done, praise him when you are weakend praise him ask him for answers. God isnt only ur creator he is our friend, he loves us with agape which is a unconditional love that you will never feel with anyone, It’s like a mothers love, they love you no matter how u treat them. if you have a child you know what i mean.
God will listen to you, he always waits for you, and maybe my words wont hit home for you, but i know always within my soul that God, jesus is always listening even when things are terrible. I know deep down inside that God will let his will be done. He will love me even if i’ve sinned madly, As long as i feel sympathy for it and repent. He will forgive.
I know it’s hard sometimes to think is there really someone out there that loves me more than anything, more than life, more than i can explain. I know its hard but think of it as God is always there waiting for u he is always there always.
He will listen even if it seems silly or diffacult you’ll know he;s there
deep in ur heart, get past the outer part of ur soul and look within god is there waiting fr u to look for him.
Seek him
and you shall find
Because in christ All All Things Are possible
God bless
STephannie

Thanks, fighterdo. Hearing that helped.

Stephannie, thank you for your good wishes. I admire your faith, but I don’t feel like it’s the right approach for me.

Fight the good fight of faith… and it is a fight, especially in these days that we live… so many opinions, ideas, foreign gods, multitudes of religions… much uncertainity… delusions… negativity…one could go on and on…

But, I believe that we all have a God spot inside of us.. that was made by and reserved for … the one true and living God… the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob…. The great I Am…the Alpha and Omega… the begining and the end….

Prayer can help unbelief….

And unbelief is the major sin.. that affects the whole world…..

without faith, it is impossible to please God…

If you want to feed your faith, and starve your doubts…..

you will have to fill your life with things of the faith…..

bible study… being around other people of faith, listening to the word
on tapes, prayer, etc…

your natural mind.. will not feed you faith.. it is alienated from God…

the more you read about God.. the more you are drawn to him……

He is drawing you… or you wouldn’t feel as you do…

for the word says that we can’t even come to God, unless the spirit draws us….

Seek him with your whole heart, and you will find him……

here are some links where you can post prayer requests… if you want to…

Blessings….

Ive never been religious either. Sometimes I wish that i did believe that someone was watching out for me, but theres so much doubt in my mind that I cant.

I think you should consider why you werent religious in the first place. Faith is a powerful thing. If you belive in something so fully it doesnt matter if its true or not. No one will be able to tell you something different.

You can believe in a power greater than man, not necessarily a god or a certain religion. You can practice your own religion. Being religious doesnt mean you have to attend mass or church services. You can believe and pray and meditate on your own and still have that faith that can help you get through the day.

i hope that helped a little.

No one in my family is religious, and I’ve gone to church/synagogue maybe 5 times…I always feel uncomfortable there, like I don’t belong. I guess I find it hard to trust myself and what I believe. I know the answer is somewhere inside me, but I haven’t found it yet.

People who have absolute faith have so much comfort from that…I’m stuck with my confusion…=P

Faith means that you don’t question your beliefs. I feel that I have to question my beliefs, and they don’t seem certain to me. Sometimes I think that things were meant to happen to me, and other times I think it’s just random luck. Then I realize that no one can tell the difference…

Everything else in my life I can find an answer that feels right to me - maybe spirituality frustrates me because there is no one answer.

Thanks, briliantdisguise, what you said did help.

Kaimi, the first thing you need to understand is that you are not alone in this… far more people than would care to admit it have crises of faith. Ministers of religion, too! That’s perfectly normal, and is simply a sign of intelligence… an unwillingness to just accept whatever you are told, without question. God created us with almost unimaginable mental capacity (most people use only a tiny fraction of it), and it would be a great pity to waste that. Question, and think things out, by all means - no harm in that: you are clearly someone who needs to intellectualise. But remember, every so often, to ‘cease the mental strife’, and to give the spiritual realm a chance, too. Expose yourself to the beauty in nature - sit on a cliff-top and listen to the sea; watch a colourful sunset; listen (really listen) to the birdsong; go for a walk in the woods. Or listen to a piece of inspirational music. All of these things can allow the still, small voice of God to break through into your world. As others have said, faith is accepting something that you cannot prove, intellectually, but which you just feel inside. And by allowing yourself occasional contact with peaceful, beautiful, inspirational things you will nurture these feelings. Your faith will grow - effortlessly.
I’m not going to ramble on, here… I should give others a chance, too. But if you want to discuss this further, let me know. In the meantime, I hope what I’ve said might be of some comfort.

you don’t need to go to a church to say you’re religious. religion is expressed differently in everyone. for some, yes, it is about going to church and listening to sermons. most likely, they were brought up that way. if that doesn’t fit you, don’t force yourself to do it. no one is telling you to be more religious and fit these standards of religion– do what you need to do to feel complete. learn about all types of religion- if you dont think you fit into any one category, continue to stay open and spiritual. believing in a higher power isn’t a bad thing, it gives you hope when you need it most. there is no one answer– you must create your own to satisfy your feelings. you could also talk to a local minister, priest, or rabbi to learn how they see things. it doesn’t mean you should conform to them, it just gives you a different perspective.

Do not be fooled by Stephanies words…She is nothing more than a Christian preacher trying to sell you on her religion..

Religion is a choice that lies within you but it does not mean you have to pick the most popular religions such as Christianity, Judaism or Islam…There are other options..I am Ognaustic and do not belive in the practicing of formal religion…I believe in God and my religion is the religion of nature…I am closest to god when I am canoeing in a lake, climbing a mountain or just lying on the beach. God’s power and presence exists in the beauty he has created around us. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need to follow a religious outline to connect with God. YOU DO NOT…I have a very close and personal relationship with god which is daily…It is most intimate when I travel to the most beautiful spots on the planet and see his glory…or her glory…Who nows..Look for a beautiful spot in your community and try to get closer with God through the peace you will feel by beeing in that spot. Goood Luck…

It doesn’t hurt to be an agnostic. You can be happy in feeling that people just cannot “know” god…or be a Deist in the sense that you believe one exists, but you don’t have to follow any dogmatic laws or orders of humans to please him/her/it. YOu shouldn’t feel pressured that you constantly have to ‘please’ something that is possibly not there. Even if a god was there, they’d be happy that you were using the brain they gave you to question, to want more out of life than just following what others told you.

All in all, there’s no proof either way if one exists or not, so just do what you feel is the most comfortable. Not everyone needs a subscription to a religion.

Kaimi, I just wanted to tell you that no one starts out with great faith.. .I believe it starts with just a spark.. and it grows… and it can be nurtured… you can feed it and it will grow.. Just listen to your spirit within… it will lead you.. and pray.. asking God to reveal himself to you… and believe that he will.. watch for it.. he can and will speak on your terms… he is a very personal God.. and he knows your heart.. he knows how many hairs are on your head… and when a sparrow falls… if you make one step toward him.. he will take two… learning of him… and how to relate to him.. and how to follow him.. is a very exciting journey indeed… and it is individual.. you don’t have to be like anyone else… just be you.. religion will give you a set of rules to live by.. but, faith, is a matter of the heart… the bible is a book…. but, when the author of that book, speaks to you thru it.. it becomes alive… and true faith is born….once you tap into it.. you will never be the same…. no body could ever tell you any different once you experience God for your self… and no body can do that for you… and you don’t have to follow a formula… in fact.. it is best that you don’t… because the danger in that.. is that one settles for a set of rules… and never gets to know the author of those rules…

Seek the truth. Read the religious texts and philosophies. Look for what we have in common, how the religions talk about the same thing from different perspectives.

I agree with some who have posted here: I am very God centered. I see God everywhere and pray often. One catch, I am not a Christian, nor do I believe in any dogma (religion).

It is possible. Try attending a Unitarian church. They believe in adding to the greater good. They use all sorts of sources, the bible, the Koran, the Torah, Buddah, and one memorable Sunday Woody Guthry.

I don’t believe in God. I don’t think believing in God is a good idea. A creator may be one thing but a God that is involved in your personal life is another. It God creates us all and he has a plan for us all, what was his plan for the newborn baby that was that was thrown in trash and eaten by the dogs within hours of it’s birth? If He had a plan for each of us but He could not control the actions of others towards us, the chances of his plan going through anyway would be impossible. If nothing is impossible for God, he could control the actions of others towards us. I don’t have to accept He knows whats best, I can face that he is not there. I think alot of people feel a sense of security thinking that he is there and that allows them to takes which results in a higher chance of success but for that to work you have to really believe and if you have ever seriously entertained the idea of it not being true, it is not possible to believe blindly. It’s like mind over matter, you have to believe blindly. For there to be a God he would have to not be in our lives. You can be astonished by existence and grateful for your fortunes and live your life in a civilized manner, to help create the kind of world for other people that you want to live in, without thinking someone is looking over your shoulder.
