Reply from Phantom gentleman /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-4906007 Ive been in a similar situation myself. one thing I always find helps is pull out the old piece of paper two pieces for this, and list pros and cons of tangible and intangible and see which decision comes out on top. One other thing I’d consider is discussing with the employer the possibility of on the job training to learn the skill you lack. Sure it sounds like a great job but in my book itd be an extra ten brownie points if they are willing to strengthen what already sounds like a strong employee.

Reply from Crotchy /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3260074 Thanks guys for the help.
I think it is safe to say that I am going to accept it.
Ya, I’ll miss Vancouver, and all the FUN things that happen here. There is always, and I mean, ALWAYS something going on here every night. But I can make do with Ottawa, because I know I can do anything there as well.

And on a side note last night, I managed to get out of a plateau in my learning skills, which I really needed.

Sarah… now the flight is not as much to come down to Ottawa :D lol ;)

Reply from Marylou /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3257978 Sounds like you’re leaning towards Ottawa… Seems like you can take the job and later go back to University during a sabatical leave and possibly even start your business there. As far as being afraid that you will end up doing no more than computer work for the rest of your life, well you know that is a possibility but only if you allow it! It’s all up to you. Don’t let your fears hold you back. You have the will power and can do whatever you choose with your life.
I hope you realize how fortunate you are. Please, just remember to never let your fears or insecurities decide for you. Take control of your life.
You are still young, healthy, energetic (Right?). Anything’s possible!
:)

Reply from Crotchy /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3257694 Ya, thanks guys.

Today was just as confusing as yesterday.
My director personally called me with the offer and advised me that she had already notified my contracting agency of the offer… ( This is a huge thing because I need to play this out right with the agency and my boss out in BC).

So, I told her that the last thing that I want to do is burn bridges and leave bad impressions. I told her that I would need till monday to think about it as well.

The issue at hand is not so much the job or opportunity. Yes, it is a once in a lifetime issue in this case… the problem is rooted into more my personality than anything else.

On one side: I joined this whole different community when I moved here (it has helped me grow and become a better person, and developed aspects of my life that I needed to work and re-work on… more on that later). This is mostly exclusive for guys and it’s based on a lot of self-help, support encouragment. But most importantly, I have met some guys who are considered masters in their field and made great connections that I know I can learn a lot from… however, me moving back to Ottawa would seriously hinder my learning curve in this field, but at the same time put me in a position where I will be able to help push a self business faster because Ottawa is a nice hub between Toronto and Montreal (one of the guys wants to develop his market overthere and having me there will help greatly!)

On another note: I’m scared that by taking this job, I’ll become complacent and will not do more with my life than just computers. when I originally past on this offer originally, I had decided to go back to University… but I know I can still accomplish this while still working for the gvt, because after probation, I can take a sabatical leave.

job security is great… 3 weeks of holidays is even better… 10 days of sick days as well.. But the issue is just my own personal growth.

Sarah, the issues that made me un-happy in Ottawa are no longer an issue. I will be happy where ever I will be in the end.

Does this makes sense to you guys? :S

Reply from SARAH! /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3256444 Is this an opportunity that you feel you really couldn’t turn down? Do you think that this would be your one and only chance to get this kind of job offer again? If you ask me, you are happy in Vancouver, happier than you were before at least, so I wouldn’t go back just yet, unless, like I said, you don’t think you would get this chance again. Follow your head hun… like everyone else has said, follow the gut feeling :)

Reply from Marylou /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3256095 Here are a few questions for you. What would be your motivation if you decided to stay in Vancouver? And what would be motivating you to go back home right now? Because you know you shouldn’t be letting fear or insecurity guide you in the choices you have to make. Go for what really stimulates you. If you really feel like being back in Ottawa right now, then that’s what you should do. But of course, this may not be the case. Follow your gut feeling.
Oh, and trust how you feel when you wake up in the morning after a good night’s sleep. That’s when the answers to our questions are the clearest.
:)

Reply from Silent.Scream /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3255866 If you think it is moving too fast, then maybe you shouldn’t do it, if you are not ready. But, you should also think of your future… What would be best for you in the long run. And if you plan on moving back anyway… then what’s a bit sooner? And, if you choose to come back to Ottawa (go sens go), and you don’t like it, you can return to BC, no?

It’s really something you will have to figure out yourself. I wish you the best of luck :-)

Reply from Heather: Given It /post/112502-ok-i-need-some-advise#reply-3255729 Honestly, if you know you will be moving back home. Take this experience as a vacation. You can choose to say vacation over and move back, or say your on still vacation and stay where you are till your ready to move.

Its all based on how you think it will impact your life how and when you want it to. you have control over it, if this job opportunity comes once, ask yourself is it worth taking or still being on that “vacation” if you know you wont be staying where you are for long then why stay longer?
