Reply from PersonalPandaParty /post/120667-i-received-a-painting-easel-for-chr#reply-3324574 Sometimes, I don’t even know what I mean by it. I don’t know what I’m doing! That’s what I love about abstract. My mind has no idea what’s going on. It’s…direct communication between my hand and my soul. I don’t think about it until I’m done.
But, the entwinement in the corner is couple in love. The swirl in the middle in the sun. The two large creatures are just that…large creatures. I modeled them after giraffes. And the thing looking from the top is a snake…
Hmm…I think it’s supposed to be the Garden of Eden.

Reply from PersonalPandaParty /post/120667-i-received-a-painting-easel-for-chr#reply-3324556 Um, no. I still want to paint, but I can’t, I guess…Well, not know. You just made it harder than I thought. That isn’t a bad thing, though. I like a challenge.
Oaky, then. The oily stuff is labeled “Oil colour Painting Medium”
Oh, I just found an instructions booklet. I shall read. But I like to figure it myself, without rules, but I guess I have to, unless I want to waste this stuff.

Reply from ~Soulsearcher~ /post/120667-i-received-a-painting-easel-for-chr#reply-3324543 KK. Um.. the oily stuff in the bottle probably is linseed oil. It is a oil paint thinner alright. But you have to have turpentine or a substitute to clean your brushes. Turp can be used as a thinner too. I mix both the turp and the linseed oil so that the painting would dry fast. If you use linseed oil along then it would take a longer time for the painting to get dried.
Don’t worry, trial and error is the way to learn. You’ll know empirically then what needs to be done.
Why not invest in a good book on ‘oil paint for beginners’? There are good instruction books available in all major book stores. Anyway, that’s how I learned to paint in oil, they helped a lot.

(I guess I have no idea what I’m doing…)
I’m scanning the thing right now.

Reply from ~Soulsearcher~ /post/120667-i-received-a-painting-easel-for-chr#reply-3324519 YW. Yeah, a pencil sketch is good too. But when you plan to do a big painting on a canvas, charcoal is much more convenient. Oh, btw, when using thinners like turpentine or others, do it in a well ventilated area. And some oil colors like titanium white is toxic so mind that you don’t get in in your mouth by accident, hehe. Wear some old clothes so you don’t get paint on your good clothes b/c they are hard to remove. Always keep the used brushes in a container with Turp so that the paints won’t get dried on the brushes.

Reply from PersonalPandaParty /post/120667-i-received-a-painting-easel-for-chr#reply-3324511 Well, thanks. Yes, they are oil paints. I sketched out this with pencil. I can use charcoal to sketch later, especially because this printer paper has something on the over side…
Well, thanks again for the advice.

Reply from ~Soulsearcher~ /post/120667-i-received-a-painting-easel-for-chr#reply-3324508 I assume you are going to use oil paints? Or is it acrylics? either way it’s always good to plan the painting first before move on to the canvas. You can use charcoal to sketch the drawing on the canvas. Then build the painting Up gradually (if it’s oil). First use thinned out paints as washes to form the fundamental painting and gradually use thicker and thicker layers to make it come out as you want to. If It’s oil then let the first layers get dry first and and you can put other layers on top of them.
If it’s acrylics then you have to be more quick b/c they dry fast. And putting layers on top of prior layers of acrylic paints would alter the color of the second layer.
