Reply from purplemunki /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3686001 Wait now, Im not putting or fixing anything on the car. Im a mechanics best friend. I figured I could get it and sink right at $3200 into it. And then it would be a good car.

I dont like Civics.

I liked this car modle first . Had admired it for a while.
I was walking through this car lot that had Lots of cars, and I saw it, pointed it out. My mother said “You would like the only crap car on the lot”
I like crap cars, I cant help it.
I cant help but to cling on to what I find I like because its so rare that I do. Ive liked things that weren’t here, that doesnt help either.

I dont like Civics.
Lols Yes I mean to repeat.

But no matter what some day I will buy a crap car and fix him up. For now tho I will wait. But Im not buying a Civic its not small in the right places.

Reply from Brayker /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685942 Well you can put a better ‘whatever’ in the geo…but also have to remember that alot of ‘these guys’ on forums, when putting alternate motors into their cars, either have the knowledge to do it themselves, or the cash to do the swap.
FYI, full swaps range from $2000-$4000 depending on the motor/trans combo, vehicle it’s going into, and labour required.

A side note…if you were to swap a different engine and transmission into the geo…you’d most likely be looking at a honda motor :P ;)

I actually agree, the X-90 was a great concept…it just flopped…

If you’re not into the Civics…that’s fine…your choice obviously…lol…

But as with what marionms said…perhaps this is just a case of ‘it’s here and I want it’ but aren’t thinking practically.
I’m in need of a motor for a project vehicle I own…as of recent, one came to my attention for a great price…in my excitement I almost purchased it…but after being brought to my senses by a family member…I did some research on it…and found it would have been more of a pain than pleasure…

Just do as much research as you can, and determine if putting the time, work and money into this car is worth it in the end…

Reply from mar98 /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685935 well, you could put a better motor in it, but thts not gonna make the rest of the car better! or is it? I don’t know specifically what goes wrong with those geos, but you should check out some websites on them and find out their problems.
Also, In my opinion you like this car only because it’s right there and you could easily get it. I really think you should wait and save your money and get something with a good rep. You’ll be happy u did..trust me!

btw putting a different motor in is not easy unless you know how and are set up. It may seem easy, but in reality it’s not. I think you really need to think about what you are doing here and what’s practical. ,good luck!

Reply from purplemunki /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685835 I see guys on forums always putting motors from some other car into theirs. Why can’t I just put a better “whatever” in the geo?

Civic is Similar but not same.

X-90s are awesome.

And duh… No I dont know what Im talking about.

I dont like honda civics. Why wont you ppl lie to me =]!

So, keep saving and get a VW Beetle? If I get this job I will only be 2 months away from having enough. If not… yah munki ball spit!

Reply from mar98 /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685777 Yeah, I don’t think it’s worth the time, effort, or money either to make an already bad car good! I own a 1988 honda civic that I bought for $1000 with 155k and it’s been great! Not one problem yet and I drive it in tough conditions everyday.. oh and it now has 163k.

Reply from Brayker /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685734 Transmission and labour should run you $600…that’s a guesstimate though depending on where you get your transmission from, who does the work, and where you live.

You’re not really starting anything from ’scratch’ as you’re using all OEM parts, and if you’re talking about rebuilds, then you’re digging into the $1000 range for a transmission rebuild.

A hatchback Civic will offer similar size, and excellent mpg…it’s just a easier option that throwing money into a vehicle that could potentially be a waste.

Don’t even think about waisting your time or money with the X-90, it was a failed project for many technical reasons.

Reply from Brayker /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685705 Go with a Honda Civic…cheap, reliable, and easy to swap out motors and transmissions in the event of a failure…

Reply from mar98 /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685702 IDK I never tried it..I think it would be a pain and if you dropped the manual and bought an automatic it’s gonna probably cost a lot new. Unless you go to a good junk yard or can get a used trans cheap somewhere.. check around!

btw. geo metros are not great cars and I’d be careful buying something like that. There are plenty of cheap cars out there.. I prefer older hondas or toyotas.

Reply from Brayker /post/156107-is-it-possible-to-rebuild-a-manual#reply-3685686 There’s no point to ‘rebuild’ a manual transmission into an automatic
A transmission swap on the other hand would work well…which I could imagine wouldn’t run you more than $100 for the transmission itself…labour is another question entirely…
