Reply from sans-sans /post/159104-what-are-you-doing-for-your-mother#reply-3719088 Back when I was in my early twenties, I was driving home from work late at night. And I started remembering all of the things my dad had done to me and my brother and sisters and mom. He had a lousy temper. Not the throw-you-through-a-window kind, just bad enough to make life a living hell. So I started naming the things he had done outloud, sort of in prayer, sort of just saying them. And one by one I forgave him for every embarrassing, violent of hurtful thing I could remember. I’m not a crying type, but I bawled as I did this. And my relationship was never an angry, bitter one after that. Over the years he mellowed out some. He was a good grandfather. He died about a year and a half ago. I’ve never regretted forgiving him. So forgive your mom. Even an *** of a parent can get better.

The only gift worth giving to someone like that is forgiveness. And it helps you as much as her. She doesn’t even have to know you’ve given it.
