Reply from chev.jame /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3724509 Well, you passed the physical, didn’t you? The employer cannot use the physical to get around the law. Besides, after a period of time has passed, normally around two years, it’s very difficult for an employer to fire you for anything withheld on a physical. I think I would try to keep working, though, and manage the pain. As for the student loan debt, a lot of people owe a heck of a lot more and have NOTHING to show for it! At least you have an education!

Reply from rstarzboxer /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3724051 I think that is true, I don’t think that in the U.S. an employer can discriminate against it therefor you don’t have to disclose that information. You do you to tell insurance companies and they don’t have to cover pre-existing conditions for a certain length of time.

Reply from chev.jame /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3724025 You were not required to tell a US employer about a “pre-existing condition.” Employers are prohibited by law from asking you health questions.

Reply from Anonymous /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3723888 Refund…that’s funny, I wish! As for your suggestion VKei, an 80k salary breaks down like this….after taxes, medical premiums, and union dues I see about 45k. That 45K gets divided among the following, car payment, gas & maintenance, food, insurance, doctor copays, prescriptions…would be the major ones. It’s a quick list so I could be leaving some out but I think that is it. That all adds up to roughly 20k which leaves 25k left for the loans. I have 10k in credit card bills that i’m paying as well. That leaves me with 15k left for the loans and any miscellaneous crap that I left out……mas1s, you hit the nail on the head with the pre-existing condition, I can be fired but I didn’t tell them about the condition because if I did they wouldn’t have hired me. I know all about the laws in place but try putting them to use. Easier said than done.

Couldnt you be a consultant in this field from home?

Reply from chev.jame /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3723239 Can your disease be managed so you can continue to work? In this country, unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of good disability programs. I don’t think you need to keep your health issues a secret. I don’t think quitting the job is the answer–not unless the pain is just too much. But sitting at home, you’ll still hurt unless you have the pain under control. Maybe you should tell your supervisor about your condition. It would be illegal to fire you for it!

Reply from VKei /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3723167 It may not be the quickest solution, but if you were to live frugally for a year making 80k, you could probably take a good 55k-60k chunk out of that loan. After a year and a half, that would equal debt free…

Although I’m not sure waiting that long is an option you’re willing to take.

Reply from rstarzboxer /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3723071 Find a way to get rid of the debt….bankruptcy might be your smartest move if you don’t have major assests. Alot of times you will be able to keep your house/cars…ect and still purge your debt.

Reply from sansceriph /post/159509-i-have-90k-in-student-loan-debt-for#reply-3723052 You should talk to an attorney. I know you don’t want to file for bankruptcy, but maybe there are other alternatives. Also, listen to Dave Ramsey, a financial adviser who is a great inspiration to anyone trying to get out of debt. His site is daveramsey.com and he’s on the radio in a lot of cities.
