I always used to sit quietly in the room i thought it had dissapeared in and listen to the sounds of it moving to find it at night.

There is maint to be a good way of trapping a hampster by making a staircase out of books to the top of a bucket. You place some food in the bucket and a little on the books to lead him up the books. Then when he goes for the food in the bucket he falls in and cant climb out.
