Reply from chev.jame /post/223225-im-in-canada-and-my-boyfriend-was-a#reply-4556350 I instructed my kids at a fairly young age: do NOT get into an altercation with a cop. They have clubs. They have Mace and Tasers. They have guns. Some of them joined the police because they wanted to go on a “power trip.” It is a losing proposition to argue with a cop. You do not have to waive your rights, but beyond that you need to take up the problem with the chief of police or the courts, not the cop standing over you.

Your boyfriend was lucky. By the way, I don’t think you had to let them in. It’s best to answer the door, and close it behind you, not letting the cops in.

YOU will NEVER benefit from the cops searching your house or car, so it’s best to prevent them from doing so. Just politely decline any warrantless searches.

Check out the following Web site: http://www.flexyourrights.org/ Canadian and US law is very similar on these points. It’s important to know your rights. If you don’t know what they are, you cannot exercise them!

Reply from Da⌐11 /post/223225-im-in-canada-and-my-boyfriend-was-a#reply-4554030
they have to have a warrent.. unless they know or have suspicions you have drugs in your house or something
They would need a warrant to “search” the house. They don’t need a warrant to arrest someone in the house.

Reply from Sir Urgdu /post/223225-im-in-canada-and-my-boyfriend-was-a#reply-4554005 I don’t know Canadian law, however in no country do you have legal immunity because you are on private property to the best of my knowledge.
