try approaching him when he’s calm, and in a quiet place where you two can talk without being interrupted…

I’d tell him that you need some time to sort things out in your head, because of all that has happened in your past…that it doesn’t mean you’ll leave him, or that you’ll break up, because you love him…but you need to do this, and this is the only way…
