Reply from Step666 /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685732 Smoking pot if you have some sort of mental issue is extremely inadvisable as there is a strong, if as-yet unproven, link between marijuana and problems such as extreme paranoia, schizophrenia etc.

Reply from Step666 /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685663 You should always have any medication prescribed by a doctor - someone who knows what they’re talking about - as opposed to just picking one type out yourself.

Reply from freespirit /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685658 depression that lasts for more than a couple days is something to be dealt with. Your school counselor is a good place to start. Your parents would be the next step. If they are not paying attention don’t give up. There are many programs to help with the finances. Wal-Mart has prescriptions for $4.00. It can be done!! Antidepressants will help and you may be amazed at how much they can help you feel better and want more for yourself. There are many on the market and the first choice may not be the best, but one will work. They may not be something that you will be on forever but just a while sometimes helps. Fight for your right to be happy and productive.

Reply from Step666 /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685647 It becomes something you need help with when you feel that you need help for whatever reason, be it an inability to carry on day-to-day, the feeling you might do something stupid or just generally being sick of feeling the way you do.

As for where to seek help, you could start by telling your parents.
Or talking to a friend.
Or posting here on Help.
Sometimes just talking to someone can make a huge difference.

Reply from avaeccus /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685625 Hmm, I don’t really have a doctor, and I don’t have insurance of any sort, I’m 16, and my family is not in high finance you could say. So… where should I start from here…?

Reply from tjwoods /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685619 You can talk to your doctor as you would for any medical problem, or you can look for good therapists in lists of top medical professionals. Most metro areas have magazines that list top doctors and such.

I would start with a counselor or therapist before seeing a psychiatrist (i.e., a medical doctor), because most psychiatrists focus on managing medications and don’t depend as much time addressing other issues. They can be an important part of treatment, but a good counselor can help you know what to talk about with your psychiatric doctor if you see one.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that not all doctors or therapists are good. If you feel like you are not getting much benefit from the first one you try, consider trying a different one rather than stopping altogether.

Reply from Bogdan (Gone) /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685606 I think the best place to start would be your local GP, they can refer you where you need to go and give you the basics of help.

Reply from avaeccus /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685603 Now there’s that tricky little bit about getting help, which I don’t know how to do. Plus, everybody thinks I’m fine, because I’ve always pretended to be, so it’s hard to bring up.

Reply from Bogdan (Gone) /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685599 You are at a point where you need help, fast.

Once it interferes with functioning, it is a problem.

Reply from tjwoods /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685595 It is a good idea to get help even for mild or moderate depression, because if it worsens it becomes much harder to seek out help. Professional help is not just for people with severe problems — it is actually much more effective if people seek out help before anything gets bad, just like with many other illnesses.

Reply from avaeccus /post/234957-when-does-depression-become-somethi#reply-4685582 Pretty bad I guess, I am always rather lethargic, so I guess it does affect my daily life, rather greatly.
