This is why I put my passwords under my keyboard written on a piece of paper, so if I forget my password this helps me remember it.

If you want to try hardware, you need to open up his desktop’s tower, and look towards the bottom where there should be a double and single switch, unhook them and then reattach them and it should start all over. This is risky, since it might remove the entire OS. This is the method used to reroute the directory during a directory removal, so it doesn’t always have desired results. You might also try removing his hard drive, attaching it to your own computer as a slave drive and wiping it clean and reinstalling it that way. You can also use utorrent or another bit torrent client to download a windows xp disk without creating one. You will still need an isoburner, cd burner, and cd for this.

My friend’s is a desktop. I have absolutely no idea about the specs, manufacturer or year it was made, but it’s extremely old. I will try and find out but he has gone offline.

Mine is also a desktop. It’s an Acer Aspire, a T180 I believe. Bought it December 06. AMD Sempron 3200+ Processor Single Core 1.81 ghz (awful I know).

And I don’t have the original disk either (borrowed off a friend, my computer had died and my back-up disks refused to work due the boot.ini file mysteriously going missing, his disk has suffered the same problem now).

That should be what you need to make a bootable disk. I use isobuster but I’m sure you can use and iso burning program. I’m still fiddling with my stupid Dell to tell it what I want it to do.

Actually if you’ll give me a few minutes I’m going to see if I can zip file my windows xp disk and then just email it to you. Then you won’t have to worry about it. This could take a little while, so if I’m slow to respond be patient.

You can google how to slipstream a windows disk in the meantime and it will tell you about the process. It looks difficult but I promise it isn’t.

He can’t do the second one either. He can’t install stuff.

It’s gonna have to be either hardware resets or XP. I don’t know how to create a setup disk. Will I need a CD or DVD?

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
3. On the Users tab, click the name of the user account that you want to reset the password for, and then click Reset Password.
4. Type a new password in the New password box, and then type the password again in the Confirm new password box, and then click OK.
5. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

In Windows XP (not Windows Vista as Administrator account is not enabled by default), there is built-in Administrator user account, that has administrative credentials, enabled by default, and without any password to protect the account from been access. If you didn’t change this Administrator’s password, then try to sign in to Windows XP without password.
OR:
LOGON.SCR changing administrator or domain admin password hack works on Windows NT 4.0 and some versions of Windows 2000. The simple trick uses Cmd.exe as screen saver that triggered by system when idle, allowing users to access to command prompt to change password.
OR:
John the Ripper is a fast password cracker based on dictionary attack with a wordlist currently available for many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different architectures), Windows, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. Besides several crypt(3) password hash types most commonly found on various Unix flavors, supported out of the box are Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM hashes, plus several more with contributed patches.

It’s XP, I think Professional. He can get on the other accounts on the pc, but as I said, they are all limited. I have tried Ophcrack but it won’t run (computer is extremely old, just with XP on it).
