Reply from fra37 /post/256378-i-believe-the-following-is-an-arthu#reply-4876290 I have no idea who spoke the line, many years ago a friend gave me the quote, he was studying the play and said when he read it he thought of me, I have always remembered it (I think I have it exact, although in the past 17 years it may have wandered a bit from the original) but couldn’t ever find the source. I have ordered a copy of the play and will read and find it!!

Reply from theresape /post/256378-i-believe-the-following-is-an-arthu#reply-4876279 Guess I should! Who speaks the line, do you know? Is it Linda, in her graveyard monologue?

My husband played Happy Loman when we were young … I never did the show, but I directed The Crucible and stage managed All My Sons.

By the way, I just extracted the phrase “strangers in the seats of the mighty” to google. I figured it was distinctive enough to get google’s attention. And it worked!

Reply from theresape /post/256378-i-believe-the-following-is-an-arthu#reply-4876193 I googled it, and found it in a book of essays by Arthur Miller. Here’s the link:

Reply from theresape /post/256378-i-believe-the-following-is-an-arthu#reply-4876187 It’s definitely not The Crucible. And I can’t place it in Death of a Salesman, which I have seen at least half a dozen times—although I can’t claim to have memorized it.
