Reply from grubesteak /post/783-can-someone-please-help-me-learn-to#reply-11495 You’ve made an important first step: you want to change. Most people fumble through life being normal.

Normal’s broke.

You’re in good shape by starting while you’re young. Motivation is key, but a little knowledge will go a long, long, long way.

So, here’s a book. The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey.

If you’re serious about getting a handle on your money, get this book. It’s amazing and totally changed my life. And if you want to get married, it would be best to be on the same page with your s/o, since money fights and money problems are the No. 1 cause of divorce in North America.

If you want to contact me further about this, feel free to do so. I’m here to help.

Reply from Jeff /post/783-can-someone-please-help-me-learn-to#reply-11493 Do you keep a balance book? If not, that’s the first place to start. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t have to be perfectly annotated, but simply get some paper, or a spreadsheet on your computer and log EVERY purchase you make. Food, games, parties, tickets, movies, whatever. If you spend it, write it down.

Knowing WHERE you blow all this money, and having it in a single, physical, REAL location staring you in the face is probably a good first step to fixing this.
