oh my god! i was just sitting here surfing around looking for one of those little wireless connect cards and i got here. ok i am totally overwhelmed. are they a good idea or bad? im just looking to get a better connection with my “home pc”. my house is not that big. but im lucky to get three out of five bars and my year old laptop is constantly loosing the signal, while im in the house. i really hoped these cards were going to be my salvation. now, don’t know. should i or not? the least expensive way of obtaining results would be great.

Then the host PC will act as the DHCP server for the rest of the network and assigns the IP addresses to all other systems needing internet. Be sure to turn off any DHCP within the router itself, or you’ll have IP conflicts and internet sharing will not work. Just set the host computer IP address to a fixed 192.168.0.1 (I think this happens by default when you enable ICS) hard wire the host PC to the wireless router with an ethernet cable. Now any other system connecting to the router via WiFi or direct cable connection will be assigned an IP from the host machine and then be able to share the hosts internet connection.

I have done this even in instances where a friendly neighbor allowed me to share his WiFi, but I could only receive his signal on one desktop on an upper floor in my house. So I enabled ICS on that machine and did exactly what I described above and was then able to share his WiFi connection with full power anywhere in my house. In effect creating a repeater type device out of my router sharing my neighbors internet wirelessly.

If you are trying to get all your home computers (already wireless capable) on to access the internet through your router, I think (if I read you correctly) you are trying to connect the internet modem to the router and then access with your computers.
Wrong. AFAIK that will NOT work and heres why -
YOu need one computer to access the internet through the modem - that becomes your “gateway” to the internet for your HOME NETWORK and all computers linked to your HOME NETWORK. You may have already connected with your home wireless network - but not the internet - and have experience. IF not, listen to advice regarding Internet connection sharing posted previously.
As with Shade Tree mechanics - if your shade tree is hard to start or won’t run properly, go with these, otherwise find a qualified vehicle mechanic for your car(s) - don’t trust just any store clerk. Many times they just want to make a sale and get you out the door - any returns or problems will be at your expense, not theirs.
Otherwise if you must rely on store help - look for the guy with a maniac gleam in his eye who just can’t stop yapping about gigahertz, front bus speeds, memory bus speeds, memory types, hard drive controller interfaces etc. etc. ad nauseum, ad infinitum.
A good idea is to google research any such project before you get into spending money phase - and become informed as a consumer.
I mean, I hope you are not the type that votes the cutest smile for President… right?

As far as I know Belkin doesn’t make the router you need. the Linkys model is the WRT54G3G-ST and runs about $300.00. I bought a Cradelpoint e43 for $99.00. It works great if your computers are going to within 50 feet of the router. You plug the internet card directly into the router which is about 3 x 4 inches. you see, the router takes in a signal from a modem, and puts that signal back out as a wireless network. the adapter catches that signal out of the air, and sends it down the usb cable into the computer it’s plugged into.

but, you DON’T HAVE A MODEM, that’s the problem. the router doesn’t have a way to get the signal from your device.

thus, the router is useless, and the adapter is REALLY useless, and the guys who sold it to you are the most useless of all.

ok, what you should do is: put the router and adapter in their boxes and return them to the store. take your verizon device with you.

walk up to the people in the internet-doohickey section, WAVE THE DEVICE IN THEIR FACES, have them turn it over in their hands a couple of times, invite them to smell it or taste it or WHATEVER is necessary for them to understand how it works.

then ask them if they have a ROUTER that will turn that internet connection into a wireless network in your home :D

OR plug the device into that “belkin usb network adapter,” and then connect the adapter to the router via ethernet cable
