oh my god! i was just sitting here surfing around looking for one of those little wireless connect cards and i got here. ok i am totally overwhelmed. are they a good idea or bad? im just looking to get a better connection with my “home pc”. my house is not that big. but im lucky to get three out of five bars and my year old laptop is constantly loosing the signal, while im in the house. i really hoped these cards were going to be my salvation. now, don’t know. should i or not? the least expensive way of obtaining results would be great.
so thanks for listening and maybe someone can give me a little help. it would deeply appreciated.

He would not or could not I don’t know which tell me. But it can be done according to him. I was also asking about buying a phone at the time so who knows. But I would really like to know if it could be done.

Reply from GuruMicro /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-4618155 In the past I have been able to simply set up internet connection sharing on the “host” PC by enabling ICS on the network adapter that is providing the internet (the verizon card in this case) under “Network Connections” properties. Then the host PC will act as the DHCP server for the rest of the network and assigns the IP addresses to all other systems needing internet. Be sure to turn off any DHCP within the router itself, or you’ll have IP conflicts and internet sharing will not work. Just set the host computer IP address to a fixed 192.168.0.1 (I think this happens by default when you enable ICS) hard wire the host PC to the wireless router with an ethernet cable. Now any other system connecting to the router via WiFi or direct cable connection will be assigned an IP from the host machine and then be able to share the hosts internet connection.

I have done this even in instances where a friendly neighbor allowed me to share his WiFi, but I could only receive his signal on one desktop on an upper floor in my house. So I enabled ICS on that machine and did exactly what I described above and was then able to share his WiFi connection with full power anywhere in my house. In effect creating a repeater type device out of my router sharing my neighbors internet wirelessly.

Reply from charles.justin.jone /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-4514216 you have to change the router ip address to 192.168.0.2 and share the connection in the network setup page

Reply from jbodden697 /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-4304593 I think a nutshell summary would help here.
If you are trying to get all your home computers (already wireless capable) on to access the internet through your router, I think (if I read you correctly) you are trying to connect the internet modem to the router and then access with your computers.
Wrong. AFAIK that will NOT work and heres why -
YOu need one computer to access the internet through the modem - that becomes your “gateway” to the internet for your HOME NETWORK and all computers linked to your HOME NETWORK. You may have already connected with your home wireless network - but not the internet - and have experience. IF not, listen to advice regarding Internet connection sharing posted previously.
As with Shade Tree mechanics - if your shade tree is hard to start or won’t run properly, go with these, otherwise find a qualified vehicle mechanic for your car(s) - don’t trust just any store clerk. Many times they just want to make a sale and get you out the door - any returns or problems will be at your expense, not theirs.
Otherwise if you must rely on store help - look for the guy with a maniac gleam in his eye who just can’t stop yapping about gigahertz, front bus speeds, memory bus speeds, memory types, hard drive controller interfaces etc. etc. ad nauseum, ad infinitum.
A good idea is to google research any such project before you get into spending money phase - and become informed as a consumer.
I mean, I hope you are not the type that votes the cutest smile for President… right?

Reply from jeffremus /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3916325 You can share you internet connecton through your ethernet adaptor not the usb port.
Windows help always go there first. Good luck.
To enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network connection
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.

To set up Internet Connection Sharing, run the Network Setup Wizard.
Important

When you enable ICS, the network adapter connected to your home or small office network gets a new static IP address configuration. Existing TCP/IP connections on the computer running ICS are lost and must be reestablished. For example, if Internet Explorer is connecting to a Web site when ICS is enabled, you must refresh the browser to reestablish the connection.
To use ICS, users on your home or small office network should configure TCP/IP on their local area connection to obtain an IP address automatically. Home or small office network users must also configure Internet options for ICS. For more information, see To configure Internet options for Internet Connection Sharing.
Notes

To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Setup Wizard.
For information about the protocols, services, interfaces, and routes that are automatically configured, click Related Topics.
Internet Connection Sharing is only available when two or more network adapters are installed on the computer.

Reply from lockboxdotco /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3446833 I have a USB card through Sprint (Sierra 595U), it works the same as the Verizon model. Most of the routers that will take an internet input connection start at about $300.00 on up. You cannot use a regular router. THe guy at Best Buy didn’t know what he was talking about. As far as I know Belkin doesn’t make the router you need. the Linkys model is the WRT54G3G-ST and runs about $300.00. I bought a Cradelpoint e43 for $99.00. It works great if your computers are going to within 50 feet of the router. You plug the internet card directly into the router which is about 3 x 4 inches. THen you can pick up the wireless signal with a laptop or or other 802.11g or b device. Don’t listen to the other clowns above, they know not what they write.

Reply from prohc /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3419993 Try this, it work for me. My family does use wireless internet on internet sharing.

On the host computer, follow these steps to share the Internet connection:
1. Log on to the host computer as Administrator or as Owner.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Network and Internet Connections.
4. Click Network Connections.
5. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the Internet. For example, in your case it will be NationalAccess - BroadbandAccess.
6. Click Properties.
7. Click the Advanced tab.
8. Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection check box.
9. Click OK. You receive the following message:
When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP
address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on
your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet Connection Sharing?
10. Click Yes.
The connection to the Internet is shared to other computers on the local area network (LAN). The network adapter that is connected to the LAN is configured with a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
11. make sure you have an eternet cable connecting your computer to the wireless router(should be plug into one of the port 1-4.

Reply from davedewees /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3419950 Ok, to my understanding, you have the Verizon 720 USB card. My friends here currently have the same thing, they are looking at a “cradlept” or something, to route the Verizon usb 720 over their home network. IN my experience, it looks as if Verizons usb wont share over the router, it’ll find the router, but the DNS is being denied somehow. I thought to take a crossover cable, run it from laptop to desktop, but yea, they want wireless. If you got this to work, sharing it over your homenetwork could you please give information as to how you did it. Current avail hardware: Laptop, Verizon Wireless net (usb), D-link Xtreme gaming router (with usb port).

Reply from prohc /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3173785 You will have to use Internet sharing on your computer to make it work with your router. The problem is the usb 720 can’t be shared. Just found this out. I have been using it but sometimes the other computer won’t connect. the reason is that the USB 720 will not allow Internet sharing. Leave it to verizon.

Reply from Jeff /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3034403 Woaaaah wait a tick.

The verizon service you’re talking about does not work like normal internets!

You don’t buy a router for this, it doesn’t plug into a wall. You’re using the wireless long distance net thing verizon offers.

here’s how this setup will work for you:

Always On PC (with Verizon USB antenna stick) -> Turn on “Internet Sharing” -> Plug ethernet from AOPC to a Switch -> Plug all other machines into switch via ethernet aaaaaaan Internet!

Reply from not el Trent /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3033618 you have the adapter (pictured at that link) and the router we’ve been talking about.

neither of them will work with your verizon device.

you see, the router takes in a signal from a modem, and puts that signal back out as a wireless network. the adapter catches that signal out of the air, and sends it down the usb cable into the computer it’s plugged into.

but, you DON’T HAVE A MODEM, that’s the problem. the router doesn’t have a way to get the signal from your device.

thus, the router is useless, and the adapter is REALLY useless, and the guys who sold it to you are the most useless of all.

- that is rather worthless, if the router won’t work :(

ok, what you should do is: put the router and adapter in their boxes and return them to the store. take your verizon device with you.

walk up to the people in the internet-doohickey section, WAVE THE DEVICE IN THEIR FACES, have them turn it over in their hands a couple of times, invite them to smell it or taste it or WHATEVER is necessary for them to understand how it works.

then ask them if they have a ROUTER that will turn that internet connection into a wireless network in your home :D

Reply from not el Trent /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3033550 you have a Verizon Wireless USB720 EVDO Rev A USB Modem?

i mean, do you have this: http://www.amazon.com/Verizon-Wireles…

if so, you should search all over your router for a usb port, and plug the device into that.

OR plug the device into that “belkin usb network adapter,” and then connect the adapter to the router via ethernet cable

and if none of that works… well, your only choice would then be to jump off the roof. give your family my condolences :(

Reply from not el Trent /post/90329-hi-i-recently-bought-a-verizon-wir#reply-3033528 your internet device ONLY works through usb ports, are you sure?

i mean, does it have any plugs in its sides that look like extra-wide phone jacks? those are ethernet cable jacks, and your router needs one stuck between itself and your device.

if your device DOESN’T have any ethernet jacks… well, you might be out of options already :(
