Reply from zander01_2 /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-5265561 I was just diagnosed with tonsilits earlier today and now I am experiencing some new symtoms. The large area of puss seems to be “falling off” or something everytime I swallow! I has made me extreamly nauseous. While I swallow every once in a while I get a gage reflex! and I feel tiny little pricks in the tonsils and through the ear. There is also a really nasty taste from the puss. Just wondering if anyone else was experiencing any of these symptoms too, or should I head back to the doctors.

Reply from oldfoyerspiri /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-5168537 According to the doctor at the clinic I went to, tonsillitis and mono have the same/similar symptoms. She gave me a prescription for penicillin and said if it wasn’t better in a couple/few days she’d do the blood test for mono. Thank God I was feeling better within about a day and a half. Was funny, ’cause off the start I just thought I was getting a cold…sore throat…but then it got to the point where swallowing was agony…almost on the verge of tears. Never thought about tonsillitis until almost a week in…had been really bad (on and off) for probably 4 days. I’m 39 and had never had it before…trust me…I would have remembered that pain! As for contagious, I don’t know, but figure I’ll give myself another week before I start kissing any of my friends again *L* If you have a bad sore throat and it’s been more than a couple days…get it checked out. Like I told my husband…if it was a sore throat from a cold, I’d just have to live through it…at least tonsillitis can be treated, and you feel better usually within a couple of days :)

Reply from dw43 /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-5068234 I have tonsilitis and it sucks. I was at work (I’m a nurse) and I started feeling lightheaded and my throat started hurting me. I asked one of the doctors on the ward I was working on to take a look at me and their response was “urgh! You definately have tonsilitis!” lol. I tried to carry on with my shift but after about an hour my tempertaure and my pulse was sky high and I felt like I was gonna pass out. So I went down to the casualty department and they gave me antibiotics, paracetamol for my fever and a throat spray. I feel a tad better now. I was vomitting a lot which seems to have subided, my throat till hurts though and I still have a bit of a fever but at least I cant walk around now without feeling like I’m gonna to faint. I’ve had tonsilitis many times before but never as bad as this. My advice, don’t try and go to work when you have tonsilitis.

Reply from ijejrobert /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-4900386 I’am just getting over it, woke up Saturday with a really bad sore throat and thought it may be a throat infection. Went to bed feeling like crap, woke up Sunday feeling even worse - Found it hard to swallow, throat was so sore, headache, fever & chills, nausea. By late afternoon felt so bad asked my husband to call the emergency doctor who in turn got me into the local hospital for a check-up. The doctor informed me I had tonsillitis and prescribed penicillin. Never before suffered with my throat! Monday still felt poorly but better than the previous day, the major problem was my tonsills were so swollen I found it hard to swallow and if I spoke then would involuntarily gag, sometimes being sick - which was unattractive to the parents while on the school run!!! But it is Wednesday now and I feel so much better - still my tonsills are swollen but at least the sore throat has gone. So if you ever feel that your throat is so sore it’s not normal get to the doctors and start on the antibotics before it really hits you - believe me it’s not nice.

Reply from freebird8308 /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-4807919 Good rule of thumb… If you see white spots- its bacterial and you need an antibiotic. If they are red or just irritated (no white spots) it is viral, and time will make it pass. However, until you’re 3-4 days in you dont necessarily know which way it will go, you could break out with white spots. Those are pustules full of bacteria. Yummy! Don’t kiss anyone like that.

Reply from horse_ma /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-4350073 I have it at the moment…mainly on the right hand side of my throat. Feel a lump there every time i swallow, like something’s stuck there, such an awful feeling! I went to the doctors, and i’m taking 4 antibiotic tablets every day, as well as topping up on neurofen and strepsils! Been trying to drink lots of water, and eat as much as i can bear, but most things tend to hurt unless they’re very soft/bland…anything fruity and most savoury sauces really sting, like what erin_butterfly1 said…but milk seems to really soothe that acidic, burning feeling and kinda fill you up at the same time! Just rest and try not to talk too much. Hope everyone feels better really really soon =] ..x

Reply from erin_butterfly1 /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-4174160 When I was 5 my doctor was going to take them out but then he got sick.. who ever was on call that day and they didnt want to remove them because they were infected.. so they gave me drugs. Then I moved. Everytime the weather changes I get it over again.. I know it sounds a odd. Now it is 18 years later and they are inflamed again. So you can live with it… but mine are comming out.. Doc said mine are bacteria feeding grounds. Besides now it is almost painless(untill the meds wear off)you can have it done with a lazer in 30 mins.. I figure dont need them. They hurt. Then I dont want them!
It is better then taking one t3 two times a day when in extrem pain (pain killer) Clariton or Benadril 12 hour 2 times a day (this is so you dont go deaf to the docs office it clears out the sinuses and keeps you from hearing your heart beat in your ears.. like an ear ache) Really annoying!!!! Then I have two pennicilan 4 times a day.. so you can see the drug bills are getting up there! But talk to you doctor they will know whats best for you.. Also if you doctor gives you a medication that you are useing and you have questions ask your phyarmacy they have ideas and know drug charts as well….

Foods and drinks that will help to clean and keep your tonsils feeling better
chicken soup, sprite or 7up (this is what doctors give people after they remove your tonsils because it cleans the bacteria off of the area.. it may sting a little for the first couple sips), ice cream, jello, pudding, mashed potatos, yogart, anything soft.. stay away from toast(scratches), orange juice(burns), anything with a lot of spice (it will bother your throat).

Hope you all do better.

Reply from oremus40 /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-4161870 I had it in 1999. I was at camp, and I couldnt move, my stomach was upset and my throat kept having me hack up white and yellow puss. Sometimes it feels as though you’re being choked. You can barely sleep at times.
I found this thread, because now, in 2008 I have it again… this time it feels like a mild sore throat, but you never forget the feeling of tonsillitus… GO GET ANTIBIOTICS, yes please see a doctor it’s in your best interest. You CAN get it from others, so please do not take it lightly. My throat doctor peeked into my throat, and backed away if that tells you anything…

I think you’ll find they are pretty contagious pretty much my whole year group at school is coming down with it and it’s an all girls school and i’m pretty sure my whole year group hasn’t been kissing. We recently had our dinner dance so i’m guessing it’ll have been spread all across perth after friday night…
Goodluck to everyone on here that’s sick

And yes, ice cream is amazing.
And the left over juice from Ramen. :]]

I heard after the shot of penicillin, you’re supposedly not contagious. But honestly, it’s more if your immune system is genetically predisposed into getting the illness. So if you’ve got a good immune system, and your family isn’t prone to sore throats, and you don’t go making out with or drinking after the infected host, you should be okay.

This is probably the most painful thing that has happened to me in years. It is contagious until 24hrs after taking the antibiotics through coughing, sneezing or touching. Antibiotics and Ibuprofen are definatly prefered to help you through it.

Reply from Shizuko....Sophie /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-3083854 What is Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis (ton-sil-lie-tiss) is an inflammation of the tonsils caused by an infection. In tonsillitis, the tonsils are enlarged, red, and often coated (either partly or entirely) by a substance that is yellow, gray, or white. Tonsillitis usually occurs as part of a pharyngitis (throat infection). Tonsilitis usually begins with sudden sore throat and painful swallowing.

Sometimes, tonsillitis reoccurs, and may cause difficulty breathing. If this occurs, your doctor may recommend taking them out. This procedure of removing tonsils from the throat is called a tonsillectomy.

What are Tonsils?

The tonsils are fleshy clusters of tissue that lie in bands on both sides of the back of the throat, above and behind the tongue. The tonsils’ major function is to catch incoming germs before the germs cause infections in the throat, mouth, or sinuses. Tonsils contain infection-fighting cells and antibodies that stop the spread of the germs further into the body.

If the tonsils are taken out, the individual will not suffer from more infections than they did when they had their tonsils. There are other tissues in the body that will produce antibodies to fight infection.

What are the symptoms of Tonsillitis?

Each person with tonsillitis may not experience all of the symptoms. Some of the major symptoms of tonsillitis are:

a very sore throat
fever
redder-than-normal tonsils
chills
a yellow or white coating on the tonsils
a funny-sounding voice
swollen glands in the neck
bad breath
How is Tonsillitis diagnosed?

Tonsillitis can be diagnosed by performing a rapid strep test, also called a throat culture. To perform the throat culture, the doctor will use a long cotton swab to swipe off some of the stuff on the surface of the back of your throat. The doctor will then test the “stuff” on the cotton swab. This test will determine whether you have tonsillitis and whether it is caused by a bacteria or a virus.

Is Tonsillitis Contagious?

Yes. Tonsillitis usually spreads from person to person by contact with the throat or nasal fluids of someone who is already infected.

How Is Tonsillitis Treated?

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on whether it was caused by a virus or bacteria. If the tonsillitis was caused by strep bacteria (streptococci), the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. If the tonsillitis was caused by a virus, your body will fight off the infection on its own. However, medication can be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms.
How long does Tonsillitis Last?

If tonsillitis is caused by bacteria, with antibiotic treatment, the illness is usually cured within 1 week. However, it may take several weeks for the tonsils and swollen glands to return to normal size.

When tonsillitis is caused by viruses, the length of illness depends on which virus is involved. Usually, people are almost completely recovered within 1 week.

Reply from Shizuko....Sophie /post/95005-is-tonsillitis-contagious#reply-3083848 Yes, tonsillitis can spread from person to person. Tonsillitis often spread from one person to another when there is contact of fluids of someone who has tonsillitis.
