  depends on how long you want to stay up for… you wouldnt want the same approach to staying up an hour that you would have for staying up for eight days… the “quick fixes” caffeine and other central nervous system stimulants will easily keep you up from 1 to 8 extra hours, but beyond that amount of time you’re better off without it.
  Basically if you need to stay awake a few hours just stay busy, and don’t let yourself get too comfortable. Staying awake for a long time (more than a day) is very different. One technique involves planning the time you will be awake to involve very relaxing and easy activity the first day followed by days of increasing activity. This kind of approach can buy you 2 - 3 days, but depending on your health at some point you will reach physical fatigue and most likely fall to sleep when you finally rest. Staying awake longer than that requires a great deal of preparation. Remember to stay out of bright lights or your eyes will become tired, but also be careful not to strain your eyes in low light trying to see detail. Avoid running and other high levels of physical exertion. Keep yourself occupied with no brainer activities. And most important have a partner to slap you when you start to nod off. Still nothing will keep you awake better than being in a real and dangerous situation that takes you days to get out of…

  oh no offense taken - I appreciate the words, sorry to hear about your PTSD my father suffers from that as well (vietnam vet). but one question - if we are not responsible for our thoughts, who is?

  try free association… instead of trying to write something beautiful and well worded, write absolutely anything that comes to mind as fast as you can. Fill up at least 2 or 3 pages, stop, breathe, and read what you wrote. You just inspired yourself!
