Yeah really,
During the global recession a few years back many Korean husbands lost their jobs due to layoffs.
The husbands who lost their jobs feared their wives would leave them sooo much, most didn’t tell their wives they weren’t working, instead they got up early every morning and got into their suites as they usually did, then they all gathered in the public parks and fed the pigeons until it was time to go back home.
Many of those who told their wives that they lost their jobs were either kicked out of the house or the wife went back to her family. Keep in mind in Japan and Korea a man often keeps his first job for the rest of his working life time.
So in America when I see wives comforting their husbands and taking jobs after the husband has lost his job I feel like I am in heaven… its truely a wonderful thing.
2007-08-24 20:53:14 on My husband left me and my 5 yr old girl for another woman.
Look at the good side…
I am sorry to hear it, you are not alone, over 70% of American couples get divorced.
So for any comfort, your daughter will not be mocked or made to feel different at school, she will actually be part of the majority.
As for infidelity, the statistics is over 50% of American husbands cheat.
There is again a good part to this, due to the enormous amount of divorces and cheatings, women of America have formed clubs all around the country to offer comfort. I hear its good therapy to join one of these clubs.
The majority of the women I know are divorced and single mothers.
Last company I worked for there was a unbelievable 100% divorce rate.
Everyone who had been married was divorced.
Most of them are doing just fine, despite not getting any $$$ from the father.
Some even struggle through college while working and taking care of the kids (super moms).
Keep in mind also that in America 20% of daughters are molested at home by their fathers, and it doesn’t matter if the dad is educated, wealthy or otherwise. Miss America, tells a heart breaking story of her struggles…
Conclusion…
American women are strong and capable…
Admirable qualities… Good luck to you and your daughter.

PS…
Just a addendum…
The hard school of ignoring a child’s cry for compassion during stress never worked for me… Korean mothers almost never comfort their children, not even a simple hug. Looking back now as a adult I definately disagree with the “BE TOUGH!” attitude towards children.

Amazing story !
Such dedication from wives to a man that cannt work and is scared for life!
It makes me feel warm and secure inside because in my community (Korean), wives would leave her husband after such a incident.
2007-08-23 23:34:05 on can i bring a hair straightener through the airport?
it depends… are you of a dark skin that can be mistaken for a middle eastern person… if so any metal object will be scrutinized at american airports… its very consistent… I have yet to travel in NY or NJ where a person of Indian, Pakistanian etc… ethnicity wasn’t held at the gate, even a new born mother with a baby in her arm was held, scrutinized and humiliated in front of hundreds of her fellow passengers (her personal garments were scattered all over a large table only a few feet from the line of passengers waiting at the gate).
stay away from bringing any electronic/electrical devices that cannt be turned on by battery. avoid containers with liquid or powder. avoid any sohpisticated looking electronics that may not be familiar to a ordinary person. They’ll confiscate that $5000 engineering calculator/analyzer.
then again if you use kennedy airport or newark airport you probably know all this.
if you miss your flight due to incompetence, paranoid american security personnel it’ll be upto you to pay for another flight… so don’t give these crazy people any excuse to hold you.
I bring a simple backpack and a fully charged laptop but then I am a guy.
2007-08-23 23:01:36 on Home Recording Help
Hi
Avoid anything from places like Circuit City.
I helped set up a professional recording studio.
Guitars produce one of the toughest sounds to record and play back.
I highly recommend Yamaha Monitors, they have a selcetion you can choose from.
These speakers are amazing… and can reproduce guitar sounds excellently.
I also recommend a Yamaha digital mixer.
Get one with USB, firefire or at least a PCI adapter.
Depending on your needs there is a selection you can choose from (used).
Make sure it works with your PC.
All can be found dirt cheap on ebay.
Software… start with a simple Cakewalk home studio edition… its cheap and easy to use.
As for the mic… its a very personal decision… every recording artist has their favorite… SM81 is cheap and kind of a jack of all trades… you can try it out and compare it to other more expensive and specialized mics.
2007-08-23 22:49:42 on My daughter is terrified of storms.
I had a great big german shepard that was that way.
At the sound of a thunderstorm he fastens himself between my legs and literally follows me between my legs where ever I go.
Assuming all creatures share a evoluitionary fear of storms I was able to help him by catered to his fears rather then trying to discipline him. During storms I tried to make him feel as secure and safe as possible.
After a long hard time of patience he finally learned that thunderstorms cannt hurt him.
Then again i am the kind of person that runs to a child or baby when they cry or even shows the slightest sign of stress.
I understand there is a different school of thought where its believed its best to ignore such things. That may work also, but I thinks its also stressful for the parent to see their child in pain.
2007-08-23 21:50:32 on what are your favorite pick up lines?
It would be nice to just get a pick up line…
The only pick up lines I get are from 60 year old white femlaes that think I need a green card… sigh.
But if I could choose…. I like a young lady to say “you had me at hello”
