  It is totally inappropriate for him to say anything like that to you. Confide in a teacher you trust and explain exactly what he said, when and where. Do not lie or exaggerate, but do not leave anything out. Being absolutely truthful will be important if he tries to make out you were lying or confused. You do not deserve to have to deal with this and you’ll feel much better after speaking up about it.

  Ignore the rumours, and rise above them. Hard to do but there will be people who will really respect you for that. Keep your head high and your words kind and you will shake off these rumours.

  I think the best way to let go of guilt and unhappiness is to do as much as you can for other people. Seeing other people happy or better off as a result of your words/action is the best therapy there is. You made a big mistake and I’m sure you’ve learned from it in the hardest possible way. However you are not a worthless, useless person, there’s so much good you can do in the rest of you life.
  
  Perhaps campaign against drink driving, share your experiences with others so they realise how dangerous it is? Preventing others from repeating your mistake would be a fitting tribute to the friend you lost.

  Dan I do that too, it’s natural to crave love and attention, and you’re not the only one who falls for people too easily. It certainly doesn’t make you a fool.
  
  Online interaction must always be kept in perspective, because you don’t truly know someone until you’ve met them and spend a good deal of time with them (in my opinion), but I’ve been guilty of falling for someone online before so I know how it can feel. I managed to leave that particular obsession behind when I started to be attracted to one of my ‘real life’ friends.
  
  Anyway, like many others have said, you are exactly the type of guy a lot of girls would love to be with, you have a rare sensitivity and empathy which is attractive.

  Thanks everyone - cosmic fool a lot of that does make sense to me. I am trying to take steps in the right direction, and I know that I do do some good, even if it’s for the wrong reasons. I give up more time than I really can afford to volunteering and helping others. I can’t help feeling though that it’s not because of some wish to make the world a better place, but just to prevent the feeling of worthlessness I get whenever I’m not actually helping someone.
  
  I think that, although I am not complaining in principle, being surrounded by happy people makes it more lonely. I hear so often about how everyone’s depressed, but no one I know is! I met one person once, but was too embarassed to speak to them. How do I know people aren’t feeling like I am? Well I’m almost certain because they exhibit none of the same behaviour patterns I do, and are open, and non self destructive, and get upset about normal, rational things, and cry and it’s all better.
  
  I have mixed feelings about meeting another truly depressed person. I hate the thought of anyone suffering as I do, and yet selfishly, I’d love a friend of mine to be deeply depressed just so I could be less alone.
