I think you’d find Auckland to actually be quite fun. Though I guess that depends on the size of the city that you’re used to being in. Auckland is the biggest city in NZ, and obviously it also has all the problems associated with it, like it being somewhat dirty, anonymous and unfriendly. But that’s very much a relative thing. It is probably quite friendly and clean as compared to say, New York.

And it’s true, the South Island is very much more picturesque, and yes it can be more friendly, at the same time it can also be a bit more intolerant. I imagine you would be fine, but if say, an African settled there, they’d have much more trouble integrating down there then they would in Auckland.

Wellington is probably the most friendly and by far the most accepting city in the country. It’s actually where I live, and I’ve lived in several cities now, and I’ll probably end up here in old age or something.

The simple requirements come from the lack of competition to get into the Uni’s. Universities here can’t afford to be as picky as those in the states. We have 5 uni’s here, to service a population of 5 or six million people or something like that. That’s a fairly low uni/population ratio. While it’s probably a bit more complicated than what I made it sound, ie, you’d need to sort out accommodation etc. too, it wont be terribly much harder than saying you want to attend. Visa’s are probably a different matter though, which I don’t know much about unfortunately.

I DID go to uni here, and it’s a fairly simple process. Generally speaking, you just enrol and the chances are they’ll take you.

The two best uni’s here are Otago, down in the south island, and Auckland. Of course there are a couple of others around, but those would be the ones I recommend.
