My name is Kristin. Ive joined this site to help me deal with my boyfriend’s current position.
He is an alcoholic and drug abuser and has been for many years before I met him. When we started dating, he had just come back from the Princeton House, a nearby rehabilitation center. I never thought that his past would be our future.
Our relationship was wonderful until he started using again. He couldnt relay his emotions to me. The drugs had harded him and he couldnt open up to anyone, making him more depressed than usual. We began to fight over his addiction and he couldnt trust me anymore because he was becoming paranoid.
Normally, in a situation like this, I would leave him. My problem is that Ive fallen in love with him. Something incredibly new to me.
About a month ago, he was charged with a DUI and wreckless driving after getting behind the wheel drunk. He was treated at a nearby hospital and then released. A week later, I decided to write him a letter about my fears and what I had to do for me if he was going to continue living this way. What if I had been in the car and died and he lived? What would he do? What if he had hit an innocent person and they died? What if HE had died?
The Letter was a good idea, two days later he enrolled himself into a rehabilitation center in Florida. He has been trying to get clean and stay that way for everyone he loves and fo himself.
However, Im having a very hard time dealing with all of this. this uncertainty and distance. Im located at the very tip of New Jersey and he is in central Florida. We can only talk on the phone and his depression is rubbing off on me. Lately, my mood and overall happiness is determined by his. I dont know how to separate our lives and still be in his life and still help him as much as i can.
I just need help understanding this disease.
