  I would start with this: Who were you speaking to? Why did you feel comfortable talking to them?
  
  If you can identify that, you might be able to use those ideas to help you be more comfortable talking with others.
  
  Perhaps you can talk to your teacher about it– or write her a note, at least. Tell her why you were not frightened in that situation, and ask her if she can help you think of a way to fell that way more often in school.

  Addiction is a weird thing– some people can try a pack and walk away. Others, it just takes one or two…and then you are fighting the urge to have another the rest of your life.
  
  In the chemotherapy ward, I remember seeing women trying to beat lung cancer drag their IV towers on wheels to the elevator, upstairs, and outside so they could have a cigarette. It was a sad, sad scene.

  At seventeen, the future is apt to seem formidable, even depressing. You should see the pages of my journal circa 1916.
  
  You asked me about writing–how I did it. There is no trick to it. If you like to write and want to write, you write, no matter where you are or what else you are doing or whether anyone pays any heed. I must have written half a million words (mostly in my journal) before I had anything published, save for a couple of short items in St. Nicholas. If you want to write about feelings, about the end of summer, about growing, write about it. A great deal of writing is not “plotted”–most of my essays have no plot structure, they are a ramble in the woods, or a ramble in the basement of my mind. You ask, “Who cares?” Everybody cares. You say, “It’s been written before.” Everything has been written before.
  
  I went to college but not direct from high school; there was an interval of six or eight months. Sometimes it works out well to take a short vacation from the academic world–I have a grandson who took a year off and got a job in Aspen, Colorado. After a year of skiing and working, he is now settled into Colby College as a freshman. But I can’t advise you, or won’t advise you, on any such decision. If you have a counselor at school, I’d seek the counselor’s advice. In college (Cornell), I got on the daily newspaper and ended up as editor of it. It enabled me to do a lot of writing and gave me a good journalistic experience. You are right that a person’s real duty in life is to save his dream, but don’t worry about it and don’t let them scare you. Henry Thoreau, who wrote Walden, said, “I learned this at least by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” The sentence, after more than a hundred years, is still alive. So, advance confidently. And when you write something, send it (neatly typed) to a magazine or a publishing house. Not all magazines read unsolicited contributions, but some do. The New Yorker is always looking for new talent. Write a short piece for them, send it to The Editor. That’s what I did forty-some years ago. Good luck.

  On the other side,
  
  however, I have seen people who are legitimately asking questions from a Christian perspective or about Christianity or people who ask for support of those with faith get completely blindsided by virulent attacks or told to go somewhere else. It makes me, as a person of faith, feel unwanted here, even though I try not to prostletyze.

  I too dislike anyone pushing someone else to believe what they believe, but in the short time I have been here, I have seen it go both ways and have been saddened by everyone’s input, because I wondered about the poor person just logging on to get a little help and getting caught in the crossfire.

  A Quick Guide to Researching Useful Information for Essays and Homework
  
  1. List key words with which you will search:
  • five words or phrases that describe your topic perfectly and simply—how would someone “file” it.
  • three words or phrases that “limit” that word or distinguish it from others
  example: if I want to know about what makes children in a country sick, I would say: infants, children, illness, sickness—to limit it, I might say: U.S.A. or Africa, most common, etc.
  You should use several combinations of these terms to search for your topic.
  
  2. Head to an academic library, whether electronic version or in person. Libraries pay for access to information that you cannot easily find just out there. Plus, librarians are trained to help you. If you cannot do that, proceed to #3
  
  3. Use search engines that are geared to find you more academic sources.
  • http://www.academicinfo.us/ — you must click on the topic area and then keep clicking into more specific areas related to your topic.
  • this link will not work but if it did you could click on the topic area and then search with one or two of your key words
  • http://lii.org/ - you search with key words and Boolean operators
  • http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez this is highly technical medical stuff (if you use this, be sure to click on the “limits” tab, then check “free full text” and “review” as the type of publication.)
  
  4. If you cannot do that, use google.com, but don’t just search randomly.
  
  a. First, try entering your key terms and add one of the following: “.org”, “.edu,” “article”. Search three times using all of these terms. This will take you to organizations, educational sites, and articles on the topic.
  
  b. Or, Click on the little “advanced search” next to the Google search box on google..com
  • Choose “100 results” to the right
  • Enter your combinations of terms and terms you want to exclude
  
  c. AND use Google Scholar– just type in scholar on google, follow the link and use the advanced search.

  The one peice of advice I woul give you is tht patterns of behavior are very hard to change. If a person is unreliable before marriage, he or she will be unreliable afterward.
  
  I would list the weaknesses and strengths of each guy and then ask “Which of these traits would really still appeal to me 15 years from now? Which would irritate me? It may help you get a different perspective.
  
  I would also ask the current boyfrien to show he is willing to go that extra mile by getting his GED and job training before you make any promises. I think that you will find that your difference in education level could be come a real problem in the future. I am not saying that he needs to go to college, but he needs to be further along than he is. It would also prove if he really is willing to o anythig for you. IF he does not, then perhaps you should consider at least having lunch with the old boyfriend, just to see…
