  I do that often. In fact, a psychiatric analyser once said some of my problems may be caused by trying to overstretch my brain beyond what it is capable of (I often do computer programming and other logical tasks at speeds well beyond those of more experienced professionals) and basically wearing it out to the point it shuts down.

  Without confrontation of our ideas, we cannot learn. Every argument should be taken as an opportunity to learn… even though sometimes it turns out your opponent cannot be right through logical deduction.
  
  The problem occurs when people make judgements of others through ignorance. This is a very typical human reaction (one frowned upon by Western society) to being confronted and unfortunately often leads to ’slapping matches’ rather than actually debating the topic at hand, hence why it is frowned upon.
  
  However: If both sides follow some basic ‘rules of debate’ then debate is one of the best ways of learning.
  
  The rules of debate (Danny Edition 0.1) :-
  
  o Don’t go off-topic. Only go off-topic for long enough to make a rebuttal against someone else’s going off-topic, then return to the matter at hand.
  o Think through everything logically, don’t make any rash judgements about anything (least of all the person you’re talking to).
  o Make certain you’re not taking things the wrong way, ask for clarification if you need it.
  o If the other party is talking about faith or morality and you’re taking a logical standpoint, move away from the conversation swiftly. The same applies the other way around.
  o Learn to identify when you’re beaten on a subject and learn to understand when a confrontation is clearly at a stalemate (this happens often because neither party knows everything they must to make a judgement on a problem. This is always inevitable on issues of faith and often inevitable in anything less than degree-level discussion).
  o If you’re discussing morality or religion, you cannot win or lose. There is no right. Don’t get worked up about it.

  I believe happiness should never be a means to an end… rather it should be used only for what it is intended to be used for: Your body’s way of encouraging you to act in a way your genetic make-up has learnt is a good way to deal with life. Of course, this is because I subscribe to the science of genetics, some people don’t (creationists… who are a perfect example of people who can’t accept when their logic is blatantly flawed by using faith as an excuse to make their statements unquestionable whilst using flawed logic as a vehicle of debate).
  
  I personally feel ‘utilising’ happiness in such a way as to change how you behave is a terrible way to deceive oneself. I believe that by doing so you are altering your core personality and hence doing yourself a great disservice (for what does one have that is unique to themselves except their personality and unique creations made by that personality?). Of course, most people do not subscribe to that same view.

  I’m not quite sure who this is referring to (the barbarians or the Roman Empire(s))… and it needs validating. Why did it restrain and educate them? What caused it do that? What is making you say this?

  You should outline the spiritual wants. What made Christianity so much better than the Gods to these people?
  
  If you can answer my questions to yourself then put those answers down in your essay because they get you extra credit. These are the kind of questions a teacher wants you to be answering.
  
  If you make a statement, you need to back it up immediately after:
  
  eg. “Satisfying the spiritual wants of the empire as worship had degenerated into pure formalism which was perceived as bringing no comfort to the heart.”
  
  This means someone reading it won’t be thinking “well why did it satisfy their spiritual wants”, they’ll have it answered for them. It shows an understanding of cause and effect and will guarantee marks.
  
  To summarise: For every statement you make (”the Romans did this”) you need to give evidence (”because they felt”/”as they had been told”). Start by making bullet points of things you know to be true, then show what you learnt that proves it.

  Can’t believe I’m agreeing with Dani, of all people, but really… you’re basically just making a drama of the fact that you’re unable to correctly place into context the stuff that goes on. It may sound childish, but the words “it’s only a web site” really do mean something.
  
  Most of the advice people give on this site are along the lines of “you should think happier”. Those apply here too. The words ‘harassment’ and ’stalker’ coming up seems to scare everyone into not stating this… but if this was an issue involving real-life bullies then that is what people would be saying. Using a few buzzwords derives a completely different response from people, but that doesn’t justify going over the top.
  
  Pretty much everyone who I’ve been ever been accused of ‘harassing’ or who I have felt has been harassing me has turned out to make a good friend. The main reason being that usually they’re doing it simply because they have a point to make rather than any personal vendetta. If they hated you, they would have no grounds for wasting their time on you. The world is not out to get you, it’s just a perception made through lack of understanding of what is driving someone to do that.
  
  I’ve been bullied, beaten up, hurt, kicked whilst I’m down, driven into the ground, had nervous breakdowns every night and panic attacks everyday… yet you don’t hear me kicking up such a fuss about that, so putting it all back into context what does that make some unkind behaviour on a web site?

  “Black people are poor […] and take drugs.”
  
  Ignoring the obviously ill-defined bigoted statement of black people being dumber, this is statistically more likely than with white people. This is purely brought about by the social and economic conditions in the US. It’s not a good thing, but there is reasoning behind it.
  
  “OK, apparently, I’m going to be a poor telemarketer with bad English…”
  
  Same again, simply increased statistical likelihood.
  
  “White people are fat”
  
  …and again.
  
  Stereotypes were born because they aid human beings in protecting themselves from potential threats.
  
  What you’re referring to is not all racial stereotypes, some are cultural stereotypes. However all stereotypes are born of the same drive. The drive to make a logical assessment of a potential threat.
  
  Examples:
  
  I meet a tiger. I know, by stereotyping it as a typical tiger, that trying to pet it has an undesirably high risk of me losing my hand. Therefore by stereotyping that tiger I’ve probably protected my hand. For all I know it’s a perfectly loving domesticated tiger, but by stereotyping I can protect myself from the POTENTIAL of a threat.
  
  I’m walking through a ‘dodgy’ part of town and I see a group of (if you’ll excuse the blunt phrasing) black kids wearing ghetto-clique clothing and sprouting ghetto-clique slang. I know going up and trying to befriend them wearing my goth-clique attire is probably a very poor idea.
  
  By stereotyping, I prevent myself being put into a position where I’ll almost certainly be put under emotional tension and forced into a very awkward social situation. It is not because I hate these people… or want to categorise them. It’s a basic human defence mechanism and it’s often correct to utilise it.
  
  Stereotyping itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, stereotyping through bigotry or ill-supported logic is.
  
  Some of the thing you’ve mentioned are illogical (black people are dumb, for example). Some are based on half-logic (white people are fat is not entirely true and certainly not BASED on the fact white people are genetically fatter, but there’s some evidence to suggest it’s not an entirely unfair generalisation) and some make logical sense (in the US black people are poor in comparison to white people… that’s very difficult to argue against).
  
  Stereotyping stereotyping as bad is a double hypocrisy. Once because all people stereotype because they’re human and again because they’re stereotyping stereotyping whilst stating stereotyping is wrong.
  
  All people stereotype, even if they do not let it define their actions towards people (after all, you might still pet the tiger regardless of what your brain says, but you’ve had that thought!). When people discuss stereotyping, they look at it from such a simple angle. They immediately categorise it as evil without looking at the underlying factors that contribute to its existence.
