Sorry it took me a few days; I’m on vacation. You can go ahead and delete the Explorer in your Prefetch folder; it’s unnecessary. If it reappears don’t worry about it; XP uses the folder to index data about programs so they load faster. All the Explorer files you listed are legit. It’s abnormal to have two explorer.exe running, though it’s just as possible it’s a system quirk/malfunction as a virus. Go to start>run, type msconfig, hit enter, click the startup tab. If there is an Explorer entry there (as well as in registry in HKLM>software>microsoft>windows>currentversion>run, or your start menu in all programs>startup) delete it.

If you’re concerned about it, run updated versions of Spybot and your Nod, and use ccleaner (configure it to your liking first) to clean out irrelevent data in the registry.

If, while ending the tasks in random order, you must consistently end both explorers to cause everything but the background to disappear on the desktop, or if ending only one of them consistently achieves the same result, or if ending one ends both of them, it’s almost certainly a system anomaly rather than a virus. That’s still possible if one of the processes is apparently useless, while closing the other actually ends explorer. There are third party programs which can gather more info about a specific process; you can google them. Further action concerning an illegitimate process would depend on that additional information.

Finally, if none of the above removes the extraneous process, and you can’t identify which (if either) is extraneous, more drastic measures beyond a chkdsk or sfc are most probably not worth it. As long as the process doesn’t consume enough resources to impair system performance and doesn’t appear to cause other undesired effects, it’s at least mostly harmless. As you can endtask it, at the worst you’ll be subjected to the minor inconvenience of doing so each time Windows starts.

The only downside to an AMD processor is indeed that it runs hotter than an Intel. While it’s possible to run using only a heatsink, overheating is very likely (not at all a good thing) and I’m not sure why you’d want to. Most computers have at a minimum a heatsink with a fan sitting on top of it (heatsink is the slotted metal device the fan is typically bolted to).

If noise is your concern, you can buy powerful and quiet CPU fans. I’d keep the fans on and your CPU cool. I think there are actually high-performance heatsinks that don’t strictly speaking need a fan, but why pay for one when what you’ve got is working? And should you get one, why leave the fan off?

To summarize, yes, it’s most likely possible to run with only a high-performance heatsink (your current one probably won’t suffice) but I’d just keep the fan; the benefits to going heatsink-only are negligible and not worth any effort or expenditure on your part.

I don’t use Paypal; I’m not really familiar with it. If you use Paypal, it may be necessary or helpful for the program to function. If you don’t, uninstall Paypal. It’s possible there’s a plugins setting you can configure somewhere in the program itself. I’m really not sure. It probably consumes only negligible system resources, but if you’re really adamant about somehow disabling it without removing Paypal, it is a service of some sort: perhaps you can prevent it from starting via msconfig or via Services in management (right-click my computer, manage, services, find service, properties, disable). Otherwise I have no idea.

Looks like it’s probably a Paypal plugin.

My take on it is that issues that show up in the event viewer are usually not significant unless you’re experiencing actual problems operating your computer. If your video capture software appears to malfunction while you’re using it, it’s a problem; if not, don’t worry about it (if you’re running a server, events can be more significant; video capture still wouldn’t be one of those).

I’m also assuming that the video capture issue keeps showing up in event viewer; fixing the problem won’t erase the original event. If your software IS actually performing badly, the easiest solution is to uninstall and reinstall all hardware and software immediately related to the device.

hey sorry it took so long, but ive had a ton of work and this took a lot longer than i thought. one remaining question: are there more than just music files in these folders? if yes, i have a know the extensions of the music files (mp3 and wma, right?) and if not, then the program is done. how should i get it to you?

Hey. I totally thought I had a flash program I wrote for this type of thing laying around. Since I don’t, I can write a quick program in C++ for you, let me tell you how it will work: it will load a songs.txt file (notepad) that you have to put a list of all the songs you want as options. If all those songs are in the same folder, that would be easiest for me. If you dont want the files playing with the default program (the one that opens when you double-click) then you have to tell me what program you would rather use and the path to its executable.
Get back to me so I can make this work right for you.
