Aghelly's Top (1) Replies by other users' votesI’ve had the problem of not being able to find a job. Ask your network. My first job was given to me by my friend who works there. Yes it sucked (telemarketing) but I had no references and they didn’t care. After that I got a job with a startup company whose boss liked my social science/comp sci resume and didn’t care that I had no experience. Now they are looking for a full-time replacement for me… with a masters in marketing. There’s always someone who’ll want you! Just keep trying! Once you are in college there’s also coop and stuff, I’m in Computer Science too and we have a Professional Experience Year. You have to pay for it but once you’ve done a few odd jobs you’ll likely get hired and get a good 40k for a year.
Your college will probably be able to help you with careers, too. Ask them for psychological, physical, career advice… you are paying them to help you. Depressed? My uni has sessions with therapists for free.
Volunteering is easy. Your college will have job posts and such. Offer to design someone’s website if you can (you’re in CS, html takes ten seconds), any employer likes someone who can point to the screen and say “that’s my work”. Libraries generally want you to be in information technology, but try stuff like soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food banks, clean up crews, habitat for humanity… there is tons of stuff, just search the net! You can’t not get hired for volunteering, a lot of it is just showing up at the right place.
Know your math? Everyone needs a math tutor. Some will even pay you.
Get into sports. You’re in college now, they’ll have aerobics classes and so on. Sign up for swimming or yoga or *something*. It’ll lift your mood.
Talk to people in class. Ninety percept of people in your classes won’t know anyone else either, and will be lonely and isolated. Talk to people on the subway to and from class. Just come up and say hi. Even if it’s a little creepy, polite people will give you a chance. If they’re not polite they’re losers, DITCH THEM.
Get with your old friends. All those people you knew in high/middle school. Go out for coffee with them and see where they are now. If it looks awkward, who cares? At worst they think you’re a loser anyway, you won’t drop any in their eyes, and you’ll probably never see them again unless you try to.
Go out to your college pub nights, club nights, etc. Join the gaming group your faculty is bound to have: you will meet so many nerds you’ll think yourself a king. Join clubs at school. Even if you’re not that excited about it… you could be. Go to meetup.com and join something. Find someone to get wasted with and do that, it’s better than living with your mom.
BTW, nothing wrong with living with your parents at 26. Why not? I’m not moving out when I finish uni, my friend is planning to stay until he marries in his thirties. You’ll have plenty of time to live on your own, so don’t waste money on your own place when you don’t really need it, and remember that your parents won’t be there forever. Spend time with them.
That said, when you’ve got the cash take a trip. Go backpacking. Find a group who’ll take you to Europe. Get a car and drive somewhere. It’ll clean out your system. If you do coop you’ll probably have enough to take a year off after college and go somewhere, or to study abroad.
Change your image. Think you’re fat? Go to the gym or get a library book and do it at home. Think you’re ugly? Get acne medication. Go to a dermatologist. Get your teeth whitened, get highlights or an earing or something. Look online for fashion tips. You’re a guy, right? Fashion is easy! A nice shirt, nice pair of jeans, and a smile. It sounds corny but you’ll feel different from superficial things.
Go on Facebook and randomly msg people. Say hi and talk about their interests — it’s not as creepy as it sounds, and you’re not that old, just stick to older crowds. Like books? book club! Like comics? Go to cons! Join a forum. Don’t count on real-life friends (although I’ve had some successes) but it’ll give you people you can comfortably chat with and that’s good enough for social skill start-up.
Make up with your family. Tell them sincerely that you want to change, and ask their help. Does your cousin work at a dead end job? Ask him to recommend you. Spend time with your mom and dad and learn from their lives. You may be surprised to discover that they too have had periods of slump, and they have good suggestions.
Be positive. It’s corny but it’s true. :)
