  i think the fact that you have the high self awareness that allows you to see the connection between your (father’s)abuse and your behavior is very good. now you will be able to make conscious decisions and have more self control. you have evolved past your abusive father, and will be able to avoid falling into his bad habits with some conscious effort. also, counseling helps me alot. try to get counseling, sometimes you can get free counseling through school. self help books have helped me. see if there are any self help books at your library. we don’t have to be copies of are parents but at first it can be hard to break away, especially if it is all you have ever known.

  i don’t know how much of a self-starter you are but my friend started a job at $83 with no college degree in the field of programming. he just taught himself a ton of languages and is a mega-geek. i’m not advocating that you drop out, but there are so many possibilities. one thing that sucks about college for me is that it is so terribly time-consuming that i don’t have time to pursue things that are actually important to me. i think that being away from your girlfriend must be the hardest part of it all. think about that.you could be busy and stressed all day long, feel as if you don’t belong, feel unfulfilled, but if at that day you could go home and be with her it would probably offer you so much relief and a sense of peace or a sense of being home. maybe i misunderstood your post; is she near you or is she 300 miles away as well? well anyway me and alot of my friends (that are in schools across the country far away from me) are expressing many of the same sentiments and i really feel for you. i hope you can feel, well, at least, “normal” about the way you feel. so many of us find college to be a real pain.

  i almost hate to be the one to suggest this, but maybe an “older” woman with “experience” could give you experience and more confidence. maybe you could try online dating, but most of my friends who have have had to weed out some people that were phony.

  i am a musician. i was on tour for over a decade. now i am in college. i have some strong opinions about it. i think it is archaic, for one. i said that exact same thing that you said in your post, today, as i was coming home from class; i don’t feel like i belong here. you say you haven’t picked up your guitar. do you feel like going to school for music is taking away your desire to play?
  i am so sorry about your dad. your post really provokes empathy from me. i can identify with most of the things you said.
  one way i cope with school is to treat it like a game. another thing i do is dream of the future. does your girlfriend offer you support in this? can you immerse yourself in playing your guitar, 30 percent what school requires and 60 percent what you love to play? are you in a classical or jazz program? do you prefer popular styles? i will be following your posts.

  hey bacon, it’s my post and i’ll word it the way i want to. you’re not helpful, what are you doing on help.com? you should try hate.com. there is a difference between united states slang and british slang. i don’t want to hear from you anymore so stop responding. oh and by the way smarty pants, it’s “they’re”, not “their”. what are you a two year old? leave me alone, for the third time.
