Mini-Profile

If you are like me–and millions of other homeowners–you’re probably spending some (but hopefully not all) of your extra time, money, and energy on your house.

Home improvement has become the new American pastime. Our weary post-war houses are exposing their shortcomings. So we’ve taken on the challenge of reviving, remodeling, and redecorating them.

That’s why I’m here, the new guy on the blog. I’m a bit of a home-improvement fanatic. As the “Head Homeboy” at Hometips.com, this is what I do. I share what I know about home improvement through books, articles, the Web, and television. Though my job may not be on par with Tiger Woods’, I’m blessed with the same luxury of making a living doing what I enjoy. What could be better? (You’re right, playing golf for Tiger’s paychecks would be much better.)

In this neighborhood, every house is getting improved. Though you and I may be at opposite ends of the Earth, we can have a virtual block party or barn raising here. We can trade stories, collect ideas, tender advice, and learn from each other.

I’ll be offering thoughts, ideas, and opinions about home improvement, repairs, building, and more. We’ll discuss new products, trends, techniques–you name it. My goal is to explore issues that interest you. If you have a particularly good tip, share it. If you have a horrific remodeling story, tell it. We all love the gory details.

My neighbors occasionally drop over with questions about new tile, leaky faucets, or how to plan their additions. On the Web, this can be overwhelming because I have thousands of neighbors. I’ll take a crack at answering some of the questions, but I can’t promise I’ll get to yours. I’ll be counting on other visitors and experts to field questions as well. I have a feeling there will be a lot of knowledgeable neighbors in this community.

The idea and nature of communities has changed a great deal since the quiet, small-town streets of the early 20th century. Technologies such as air conditioners and televisions pulled us off our porch swings and plopped us in our living rooms, putting an end to the “Howdy, neighbor!” era. Thanks to computers and the Internet, we have a new opportunity to return some of that small-town civility to our lives. And we can do it from the comfort of our air-conditioned homes…right here….right now. Welcome to the neighborhood.
