2009-10-31 23:18:05 on can anybody recommend a lightweight Linux distro that will run on old hardware?
arch. It’d take longer to setup than xubuntu, but then much faster and more versatile. (I haven’t tried ‘puppy’, but along those lines, I think maybe Slax, a minimal user-friendly live-slackware compilation, might be be able to be installed to a hard drive.)
2009-10-21 08:41:18 on Does anyone know anything about Ephedrine?
Ephedrine is an extremely addictive medication, and should most definitely not be used to lose weight. plenty of people have died from accidental overdoses, heart problems caused by the pill, and kidney and liver failure.
I agree with all that. I used to work at a place that sold ephedrine, and people often asked me if it was legal for me to sell it. I carefully explained as best I could that it was a controlled substance, and one of the big ways in which it was controlled was that it could no longer be marketed (in the U.S.) as a weight-loss aid, as that had been so implicated in ephedrine-related deaths and problems. Ephedra is an interesting plant with a long history in relation to humankind but the profound effect on the heart and metabolism causes almost immediate dependency as the body suddenly expects more open access to instant oxygen (it’s a bronchodilator). So then if there are negative side-effects, the choice to continue using it might seem more intuitively worthwhile than choosing to basically shut down the new normal metabolic energy and starve the brain and body of oxygen. But the side-effects can be very extreme.
sorry to babble. I’m just trying to explain some of why I agree with ms. courtybubble’s accuracy about this.

It’s somewhat amazing that this site somehow survived while CNET itself is being destroyed. (See for example http://www.cnet.com/ ) — maybe helpbot has magic apocalypse-prevention powers.

2009-10-02 23:40:46 on a weird little problem… everything in my life is so surreal.
It can be odd if life is but a dream… this may be why some people always suggest to “keep it real”. (Easier said than done, maybe.)
