  I would argue that it is much better to be honest with yourself than struggling to follow a path that you don’t honestly believe in. That’s called character.
  
  Just know that that you are allowed to change your mind, even back to chritianity, as the experience of your life unfolds. We live to be altered. Eventually your belief system (beit Buddha, Vishnu or Venus) will settle into something that resonates with you.

  I don’t think you need to humble yourself in order to respect the people around you.
  
  I’m not saying you have to suffer fools or play along with some polyanna-fake happiness, but you DO have to appreciate that some of the things you scoff at actually work for some people. If it doesn’t work for you, keep looking, but don’t tear someone else down if it works for them. Not everyone who buys a self-help book is a loser, not everyone who believes in God is a self-deluding idiot.
  
  And remember, a cynic will never have more than what they’ve already got.

  Inherent, innate. Its a critical part of what ever you are defining.
  
  Leaves are an intrinsic part of trees.
  
  Boogers are intrinsic to the inside of your nose.
  
  I like your avatar by the way. Being able to laugh at yourself is an intrinsic part of spiritedsoul.
  
  And as an aside, in reading some of your posts and replies, I don’t think you can call yourself ‘not that smart’ sister. Wisdom counts more than vocabulary.

  My argument is…, bah I’m too lazy and tired. Below is something I wrote on an old post to consider. I say good night!
  
  
  
  There is an exterior means of knowing and relating to the universe (science and the measureable/provable: a quantifiable external world ground in and verified by emperical theory)and an interior means of knowing and relating to the universe (unique to the individual, non quantifiable). Do not doubt the existence of this interior means of knowing. It forms the basic foundation of relating to and interacting with the external world.
  
  Imagine a pink elephant floating off the ground with a “Bush/Cheney 05″ bumper sticker stuck to its butt. This pink elephant may exist in your mind’s eye, and it may be a little (or a lot) different from one person to the next, but it obviously doesn’t exist in the external world. Certainly it doesn’t exist among the electric currents that charge your brain matter does it? Does that mean that it doesn’t exist at all? No, after all you exist (Descartes “I think therefore I am”) therefore that pink elephant that you imagined must exist, in that “unprovable” internal reality. And a number of people share enough of that same image of the pink elephant that they can build a common understanding and interpretation of it, particularly if the first who “saw” that elephant gave some direction about what it should look like and what it should mean to you when you see it for yourself. Now, substitute “Pink Elephant” for “God”.
  
  On a personal level I would also argue that, upon having an internal awareness of “God” firmly in my own mind’s eye, and respecting that this internal understanding of “God” is an evolving awareness over my lifetime, then my interpretation of the external world is affected by that and I can therefore “see” abundant evidence of God’s presence in the external world. Unprovable? Subjective? Unreplicable in a laboratory? Absolutely. As valid an interpretation of reality as something viewed under a microscope? Absolutely.

  Crap JM. I just read the post you linked to this one. I feel for you sister. I hope you feel better. You deserve friends and family who value you. Your humour and wit is contagious and you are extremely articulate and funny (that’s the sense I get from this site, anyway).
  
  I’m guessing that this is how you are with your friends too. Thats great, but there has to be a few of your friends that you can talk the serious stuff with, otherwise they won’t be able to recognize it when you’re hurting and will carry on as if everything is a joke.
  
  As for the drug abuse, well, everyone has to do something to cope with life when our sense of isolation grows too large, when our own thoughts obsessively haunt us, when we find ourselves doubting every choice we make.
  
  Getting wasted is one way of coping. It’s not the one I would recommend but at least it’s better than not coping. Just know JM that it is too destructive to be a sustainable way of dealing with the inevitable crapburgers that life serves you. Your job now is to search for a way of surviving the bad stuff that doesn’t leave you depressed and filled with self loathing. Easier said than done, but I know you can do it. Good luck.
  
  Read The Rules of Life by Richard Templar (I’m breaking one of the cardinal rules of the book by recommending it to you, but I’m willing to risk the karma backlash for you sister). Its straightforward and direct without any new age pap or condescending ego stroking. It doesn’t claim to know all the answers either, I just liked how it got me thinking recently.

  Hey Lazydaze. It looks like venting did you some good! Even though you are past this particular frustration, given all the friends you have on this site everyone wants to chime in, so feel free to nod indulgently.
  
  Some folks need to dominate a conversation: I’m glad you are not one of them. But just because you are polite and a good listener, well, that that doesn’t give anyone the right to stop you from speaking or dismiss what you say because they didn’t say it.
  
  Don’t get stressed out when you start being more assertive with certain folk and they take it wrong way. Remember, it’s not the names people call you, it’s the ones you answer to that matter.
