• (4 votes) What do you think about suicidal posts being directed to a professional counseling website free of charge?
  

  There are times when a suicidal post is up and no one is around to help. Or they get responses like, “Get over yourself.” Or sometimes there are too many at once. Sometimes the “helpers” who have been most instrumental in keeping someone alive have to go to work or simply have to go offline. I doubt a professional counselor would give us high marks for appropriate advice.
  
  But a lot of suicidal posters need to be talked into seeing a professional. They feel safe here. And it’s not unusual for the people doing the helping to have been suicidal themselves in the recent past. That ability to relate on such a personal level is very compelling.
  
  I would love it if a pro was ONLINE WITH US, or could be INVITED to the post, to make the transition to a counseling phone call.
  
  An automatic redirection would send a lot of posters to a suicide prevention site or hotline, who are not suicidal.. including this post.

  Well to start with, coming here was a good idea. If you feel isolated during a time of grief it’s important to connect with other people, and not to bottle up your grief. It’s hard to express your grief if you don’t have anyone to talk to. And of course seeing a therapist is a good idea. Were you and your wife part of a faith community?

  Hey Dan. I shouted you this morning and “went looking for you” kinda. Saw your shouts with Ken and Mas and figured you were doing what I tried to do a few weeks ago, which is disappear from the site. I have some of the same job-career pressures you’re feeling right now, so I know at least some of what you feel. My family is great, but there was a time not so long ago when I too felt that I was less in my dad’s eyes than my siblings.
  
  When you get that feeling that nothing’s ever going to change, try to remember a couple of things. First, that a single element in your life can turn your whole situation and attitude around. Your living situation at present sucks, no two ways about it. But catching a break with finding a decent job can make what seems like a sh**ty situation into not so bad a one. Mas is trying to help. Work with her and give a few of those opportunities a close look. Right now you’re trying to keep up a good attitude with a bunch of things going against you, and it’s hard to do. **** near everyone here has been there I guess. Second, the people here are a crazy mix of humanity, but for the most part your friends here are one of the good things right now in your life. Take a break from the place if you need it (I’ve taken three in 5 months), but hold onto that which is good, and accept friendship when it’s offered, even if we only look like text and little avatars. We are here, and we’re pretty much real, and we’ll love and help you as best we can.
  
  Sometimes when a person gets to where they can no longer believe in their self, they have to lean on others. We’re here to lean on when you need it. We’re believing in you.

• Recently I joined a Christian youth group.
  

  I have a niece that went through a similar time in her life. Her parents worship money and took it hard when she began getting involved with a church. Of course she was in with a group that was evangelizing in the dangerous areas of a big city. Then she dropped out of college and went away on a mission trip. She finally returned to school and has followed a less radical (though still religious) path. She married a boy who doesn’t care much about money, and they’re both happy, while her parents are having to just get over it.
  
  I worried my parents too, and went through a bunch of different religious groups. Now I don’t go to any church, and I see numerous problems with religion in general and Christianity in particular.
  
  Your parents will worry, which is part of their role, my advice to you is just make sure you respect them. If they see that the faith community you have become involved with is improving their relationship with you, they will ease back. It’s not like you’re having sleep-overs at a priest’s house.

  I sometimes get bogus emails from Paypall. But it’s Paypall with two L’s at the end, and PayPal only has one. Someone sent you an email that LOOKS like an official AOL thing. I would report it on the AOL site.
