  Valentines day is a marketing scheme. The card companies gotta have their money. If you are with someone you love almost every day should be valentines day. There is no reason you shouldn’t express your love for one another each and every day. I say screw this holiday. But I am usually single on it so ya might not want to take my advice hah.

  What about other family members? Aunts and Uncles might be a route to take. If she is not taking you seriously then maybe getting more close family involved will help. I am sorry you are in this situation, its hard when you are in your teens and your parent is going through these things. You want to be able to make a change in you mothers life but because she is not allowing or giving you the opportunity so its all the more difficult. I wish I had better advice to give.

  No, in fact coming from the child it means even more. It’s all about how you approach the subject, and also depends on the type of personality this person you are dealing with has. Lets take my mother for example. She has issues with depression and won’t do anything about it. I tried many different tactics to approach the subject about her getting help. I tried the angry route where I yelled at her for not taking her depression seriously, that ended up in an argument and nothing got accomplished. Then on another occasion many months down the road I tried a more sincere route where I lightly suggested that she just talk to someone. That she was more receptive too, but again nothing happened. Later down the road she ended up having a stroke because of stress, her health habits (smoking), and that was a kick in the rear. She was put on anti-depressants after that, but did not stay on them because they made her too tired. But after the stroke I was able to really sit down and discuss my concerns and my feelings with her. I was able to get off my chest how much her depression was not good for her and that she needed to start focusing on making positive changes and think more positively. Essentially I became her therapist. As her child I think I was more easily able to break through the barriers she created for herself. She tends to be in higher spirits the more I keep in touch with her and just talk things out with her. So using me as an example maybe you (or the person you are referring to) can become this parents therapist. Just by addressing those concerns and talking about them can help a lot. Its hard for a parent to listen to their younger teenage children because the parent is supposed to be the figurehead a child’s life. But all it takes is for that parent to realize that their child is growing up and that their child can recognize ill situations that require attention. The situation needs to be addressed, so maybe think about ways you can slowly work up to it. It’s never as easy as just telling them and magically things work out, problems like this require a more thought out approach.

  Yeah if its someone else’s issue they have to come to terms with it to get better. Honestly that first step is being able to admit you have a problem to begin with. Unfortunately you can’t “make” someone come to terms. Sometimes interventions can help, but those can also cause backlash and force that person further from your life. The only thing you can do is continue to be their friend and try to get them to see what you see. Maybe when they are in their irrational state you can take note of things they say and do, and bring it up later when they are more likely to be receptive to what you have to say.

  Personally I think I have bipolar tendencies. There are many different degrees of Bipolar, but only two types. Type 1 I believe is the more extreme case where you have HUGE peaks and valleys. My sister is type 1 and requires medication to function. She has been through a lot of hard times with drug and alcohol abuse because of her disorder. A lot of times they go hand in hand. I think I have some type II in me but not to any extent that requires medication. I tend to fall more towards the depressed side than the manic side. Some people fall more towards the manic…I don’t know which I would prefer because depression sucks IMO. As far as treatment, talk to a therapist. They could offer insight on ways to deal with your disorder. The thing is if you are experiencing bipolar disorder its not a simple thing to deal with. It requires talking to a professional over time so they can help you with ways to adjust yourself when you go through your peaks and valleys. No one answer can solve this problem unfortunately.
