  Barack Obama is a highly charismatic, educated and intelligent person. In “normal” times it would be a mark of pride for the nation to coalesce around such a young and vigorous candidate. Obama’s success seems to indicate to many that the long history of racial division in the United States may finally be coming to an end:
  
  “He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land” (King, M.L., 1968, Martin Luther King’s Last Speech: 3 April 1968).
  
  
  Mr. Obama is the personification of the dream of that Martin Luther King and so many other people fought for during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 70s. As a result, he benefits from a real but slight bias in the media who share this aim. What better way to finally repudiate Jim Crow than to elect a person with significant African ancestry!
  
  
  
  In addition, many people also see parallels between the Obama campaign and the 1960 campaign of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. In both campaigns a young, charasmatic, highly educated and intelligent candidate challenges the status quo and tells the nation that it can do better and reach higher. Both Kennedy and Obama have expanded the “range” of the candidates who can run for the nation’s highest office - Kennedy was the first Roman-Catholic president and Obama, if elected, will be the first president to have significant African ancestry.
  
  
  
  In short, Obama benefits from an intrinsic wish of both the media and a substantial proportion of the American electorate to expand the franchise of American presidential candidates from just white males to other races and peoples. It also helps that Obama recognizes that the current political process is broken and proposes ideas to try and fix it. This is also something that most Americans would agree with. Naturally the media is going to view such an attitude positively. This too gives him a “benefit of the doubt” advantage in the media over Clinton and McCain.
  
  
  
  The problem with giving Obama the “benefit of the doubt” is that his actual experience at the highest levels of government is very limited. Although the same could have been said about John Kennedy, the situations which they faced could hardly be more different. When JFK ran for president in 1960, the country’s economy was in far better shape; China was a virtual non-entity in the global economy, Russia was strangled by Communism and India was still struggling to feed itself.
  
  
  
  As we all know, things have changed drastically since 1960. Mr. Obama has chosen to run for the presidency in a time when the American economy is in serious danger of collapse, a new post-post-Cold War world order is emerging with the rise of China, India, Brazil and the resurrection of Russian power. He will also have to deal with the unprecedented price of oil and an environmental crisis unimagined in the time of John Kennedy. He must do all of this while extricating the country from two wars and repair the damage done to America’s national reputation by President Bush.
  
  
  
  This would be a daunting challenge for people of the class of Lincoln, F.D. Roosevelt , Washington and Harry Truman. However, by giving Obama a free ride and a virtual “coronation” - the media is doing the country a disservice by not allowing the American people to determine how effective he would be under the enormous pressure that he will inherit should he be elected.

  As a new Christian who has fought an on and off battle with cancer for the past three years, I have some idea of how you feel. Many times I have prayed for health, an end to the disease and a new start in life (the disease destroyed my career and put me on welfare). In addition, my medical care is going to be cut off at the end of this month and my landlord is hesitating to renew my lease which ends in nine days. Finally, I have been told that my cancer treatments have made me infertile (I am 42 and married to a lovely woman who wants children).
  
  As you can imagine, I have prayed repeatedly to God - asking for this series of disasters to stop. Much of the time, it seems as though God is not listening and all I have is my (sometimes wobbly), faith. Let me tell you how I got through the nightmare.
  
  Helping others! Find something you can do for others and you will find that, in an indirect way, that you help yourself. Collect money for a local person who needs it, run a collection for a hospital (I did that with St. Jude’s - it was wonderful to be able to help). Do you know any other gay people who need an understanding ear? Offer them your experiences and support.
  
  You cannot force your parents to love you or to become more tolerant of your sexual orientation. However, there is nothing that says that you cannot reach out to others who are less prejudiced. It’s time to make a positive plan to move on with your life - better education, better job - maybe even a new place to live.
  
  BTW: The best way to avoid “crappy jobs” is to get qualified to do something that you like. Apply to complete your GED (if necessary), or apply to go to a state college. I think that getting away from your home may help you at this time.

  Jenna, it sounds like your relationship with Cameron was a “rebound” relationship. You should tell Cameron that you are not ready for a new relationship at this time because you still have strong feelings for Alec. Let Cameron know that you think he is a nice person and apologize for the unhappiness that you have caused him. However, it would be completely wrong for you to remain with Cameron at this time - the truth is, you love Alec far more. Let Cameron go so that he can find a woman who loves him as intensely as you love Alec.

  Talk to them directly - preferably one at a time. If that does not work then send a letter (or an email), to one of them describing how you feel and apologizing for anything that you might have done to hurt their feelings.
  
  Perhaps your friends were told something about you that is not true. See if you (or someone you trust), can find out what is going on.

  Please accept my deepest ympathies about your father. Cancer is a tough disease to fight (I had active ALL leukemia for three and a half years) and I can tell you that, as a patient, you need all the love and support that you can get to combat it. Therefore, instead of misusing alcohol and drugs, have you ever thought about what you can do to help your father feel more loved, more comforted as he fights his disease?
  
  
  Also remember that a family needs to remain strong and united during a period of stress such as the one that your family is currently experiencing. Do you have siblings (brothers or sisters)? Are there other people that you know who are sad about your father’s current condition? See how you can serve them; comfort them; give and take strength from them during this sad period of your life. Do your best to make your father proud of you - no matter how serious his condition is.
  
  
  
  By the way, using drink and drugs is a really stupid decision. First of all, they are both illegal at your age so you are risking problems with the law. In addition, your father needs you at this time more than ever. Get in there and help him and put those drinks and drugs away for good!

  Please know that many of our hopes and prayers will ride with you during your time of trial. However, it is up to you to start the process of becoming a comfort to your father and a pillar of strength to your family at this time. It is okay to cry, be sad - even angry about your father’s illness. However, you must know that the creation of a another problem, drug and/or alcohol abuse is no solution to your current situation and could lead to a lifelong regret of your current behavior.
