  Sorry guys, I had logged off for the night.
  
  Anyway thanks for all the support. Yes it is her house, and yes she does support and help me in some ways financially. Although I do help out with groceries at times, paying my own bills, and chipping in (as you do when you live in a community).
  
  I have lived outside my house for a short while and things were wonderful between us, but it is hard to be around someone who constantly gives negative judgment. Over all this is less about her and more about me. I’ve already figured out that I’m not going to change her, and no matter where these habits come from - knowing the source doesn’t solve the issue either.
  
  I just need to turn off the “I care what my mother thinks” button and switch to a mode where I can consider what she says as if she is just someone I happen to be talking to. Sounds a bit harsh, but unfortunately this relationship will never be at its fullest potential without her making an effort as well.
  
  Anyway, thanks a bunch and I’ll do what I can to stay positive.

  I don’t believe she is jealous of my success, she is very proud of my accomplishments, but lately is seems like every comment and conversation is about what I need to fix, what she thinks of my life, and weather or not she is going to “support my decisions”.
  Which basically means if she doesn’t agree she will get in my way in whatever way she can… but I think its less about living through me as much as having a skewed view on what the “finished product” should be when I “grow up”. Heh, did I mention I’m going on 23?

  I know the best approach is to be a living example… but its just annoying to have to be the mature one in a child-parent relationship…

  It’s pretty much already there I’m sad to say… there are friends she doesn’t allow me to see, she has to know where I’m going and what I’m doing. Even if I’m on the phone she’ll jump in with “who are you talking to?” and “what plans are you making?”
  
  …and if I refuse she threatens to take my phone away, even though I pay for it. Basically everything I am and everything I own belongs to her while I live here. It’s a little like being 15 again, only I’m way more mature and I realize that she is functioning inappropriately.

  The simplest way is usually best. I find that “hey, do you want to (insert activity here)?”
  You could say anything from “hang out”, grab a cup of coffee” or “take a walk”…
  
  Although this usually comes after a small amount of conversation, so you’ve already kind of established yourself as a cool guy to hang out with… but I enjoy “laid back” way more than the “sweep her off her feet” approach.
  
  I’d say the biggest thing is not to assume anything. If you want to ask her on a date, just call it a date, don’t make her guess. That can get messy and awkward. ^_^
