  My boyfriend of 4 years and I both went into different 5-year grad school programs 1000 miles apart. We both got webcams, and I think it really helped us feel closer.
  
  It’s hard to make conversation when you no longer have common experiences, but hopefully you can make it through this year somehow.

  Update : I went to Massachusetts. It’s so hard to keep up a long distance relationship when we are both juggling course work. It’s not a satisfying relationship and I can’t see it lasting 5 years. He’s already becoming very friendly with one of his classmates and I can see him falling in love with her. He is the one that really convinced me to try the long distance relationship, but he’s not being careful with his heart. It’s so easy to fall in love, and he is not being careful.
  
  So much for that. I think we’ll break up unless the impossible happens and he transfers out here.

  Silverspur, in response to your question on brunch’s thread, I mentioned chemical engineering at Illinois because I’d be doing research in that department, although hopefully I would be able to work for one of the profs who is doing polymer research (polymer research is why I want to go to Massachusetts). I guess I should have mentioned that I am worried that Illinois won’t be a good fit because I don’t have a chemical engineering background.
  
  I have read up a lot on both schools, but I have already visited Mass while I’m still trying to arrange a visit to Illinois ASAP (I was only accepted a couple of days ago). Even though there’s no way I can make this decision before I visit Illinois, I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a beautiful day, I think I’ll take my mom’s advice and go for a walk, then come back and try to focus on my lab report that’s due tomorrow.
