Mini-Profile
I am a 41 year old american woman who has lived, traveled or worked in more than 45 countries - the last 10 years have been mostly spent in Uganda, East Africa. Over the years I have done a lot of community work here in Uganda, from which I am taking a break this year.
My life to date has been a full one.
In my role as a new wife to my dear Ugandan husband whose mother died earlier this year, I have recently taken on the management of an Acholi household that is a gathering place in the Capital for a really huge Northern Ugandan family. Together, this family is trying to rebuild in the aftermath of 20 years of civil war, and thinking about the kind of role that we - as a family - can play in contributing to the development of a very impoverished region. We have a lot of family projects happening that are really exciting.
My life is offering me a lot of potential right now.
Getting the cooking done for 8-12 people each day and making sure that every visitor (sometimes 12 a day) gets served some refreshment - all the while trying to keep all the names, faces and connections straight in my little head - is causing me a bit of stress. Not to mention the cultural dos and dont’s that living with my father in law brings to the forefront of my daily life.
My life is serving up complex and interesting new challenges right now.
In fact, I am loving my life right now. So in recognition and gratitude to the universe for the peace in my heart that I’ve got to spare at this space in my time, I’ve decided to come here to help whom I can while I am able.
My favorite pieces of advice:
# 1: Love your life, love your passions, love the lessons you learn along the way. Just decide that you will love it because it’s yours to love.
# 2: Take loving care of the YOUniverse around you that was created just for you, and the universe at large will always find a way to take care of you. I swear, it’s really true.
# 3: Forgive all the others for what they do not see and understand in you. Understand and love them for everything they have also been going through in this turbulent world.
#4: Focus on your family - when all else is lost (as it was in formerly prosperous Northern Uganda), family is the only thing you’ve got left. Build trust with your siblings, and make friends with your parents. Healing family relationships will ALWAYS bring you closer to a peaceful heart.
#5: God’s plan is always better than anything we can think up on our own.
