Yes, the immigration lawyer quoted some statute that said an employer had to show that no Canadian could do the job before it could be offered to an “unlanded immigrant.” I guess they were trying to protect Canadian jobs. It just puts a strain on families where a Canadian citizen is sponsoring a spouse from another country. Great that you got a work permit in six months! Hope the job situation is not too bad in Toronto. So many people from the Asian countries immigrate but end up waiting on tables, even if they have a Ph.D!
Immigration took about three months. We used an immigration law firm to speed things up. Worst thing: you can’t really work until you’re a permanent resident or at least sponsored by a Canadian company. That means that sponsored spouses have to cool their heels until the visa comes through. Immigration laws and practices are messed up all over the globe. I don’t think anybody does it right!
You must be in British Columbia . . . or is it the Yukon? I’ll be returning to Toronto. I hear that jobs are better out in Western Canada. Since I finally got my permanent resident visa, I hope the job search will be easier! Here in the States it’s like Great Depression II! Left a really high-paying job to immigrate to Canada!
Hey, Chev! I’ve been noticing some of your replies and appreciate your influence on this site. I’ve added you as a friend. Am I right that you were born in the US and now live in Canada?
