  Yes, you will need to find something else to alleviate stress, but you cannot do so with another habit. It’s called cross-addiction and it’s essentially switching addictions. If you do that, you won’t learn how to beat your addictive behaviors and will always be much more suseptible to relapsing. You’ll find your niche, what helps you. Just give it some time, and be strong. You’re obviously a strong person if you can do what you’ve already done.

  DO NOT drink sparkling grapejuice or anything else and pretend it’s an alcoholic beverage of your choice!!! It will get better. Not tonight. Probably not tomorrow, either. But soon. And you won’t notice how much better it is until it’s so much better it won’t even seem worth it to risk that drink. Escape is wonderful. Immediate gratification is great. But neither of them is going to be good for you. You’ll start to learn new coping mechanisms and they’ll be better ways to escape and create at least a meager sense of immediate gratification. Try this:
  
  “Nothing in life is so hard that it can’t be made easier by the way that you take it.”
  
  If you wake up in the morning and the day just sucks, try taking a nap, it feels like a fresh start when you wake up. Call a friend who won’t let you drink and see if they want to go grab a coke or shake. But no pretending- let it be a coke or a shake…!

  That’s awesome! I bet there are tons of people who read these stories and had a better day or at least a smile on their faces for awhile. It’s really hard for me to force myself to be positive, but here’s one for you guys:
  My fiancee’ had to be away from me for about 10months around a year ago. When he told me that, and I started to cry, he got down on one knee got teary-eyed himself, and asked me to marry him. I said yes but only if he got me a ring before he left so I could think of him every time I looked at it, so I had a symbol of our love while he was gone- - even if it were only a quarter machine ring. He had no money to speak of at the time, and so the cheap quarter machine ring was good enough for me. About a week before he left he presented me with a ring. He told me he bought it at the dollar store and said “So, you get a 75% increase in value from the one you wanted!” I know it sounds tacky and stupid, but it was really sweet. I still have the dollar store ring, but he’s also got one on layaway at a Kay Jewelers about half paid off. Sappy but sweet…

  I am 22, have done plenty of babysitting and also happen to be red cross certified. However, this was never even discussed. As a friend that I’ve known- though not well until the past six months- for almost four years, she knows how well qualified I am to watch her children. I’ve babysat them for short periods of time several times in the past. And the reason I’m having such a difficult time with this is because, quite simply we’re helping each other out. I’ve been staying with her free of charge with her supporting me and I just sort of nannying and errand running and house sitting, helping out, etc for about 2 1/2 months already. It’s just being set up this way now so I don’t feel so worthless and she doesn’t get to feeling like she’s giving me handout after handout. Otherwise I know I’d be able to ask for quite a bit more. I do thank you for your advice, though!
