I have to agree, one of the best lessons I have learnt in life is to work for what you want, and the sense of achievement you get when you reach your goal is something you cant buy, or have taken away. You have already made a significant step towards sorting your problem, now you just have to stop looking to other people, and do the rest of the work for yourself. Remember the strongest and most reliable person you will ever meet is you.
