  I was initially very annoyed by this thread, but now I see you haven’t even read Thoreau?

  What bothers me about what you are saying is not the general message “blah blah parents fighting about money is lame; going to dinner together and having fun is good” because I agree with that message!
  
  What bothers me is that you have this world class education, but you haven’t bothered to learn to say what you mean and mean what you say. You want to condemn an entire species and planet for going on about their business of paying for their own gas, computers, clothes, shelter, food, make up, magazines, etc when you not only don’t pay for any of that but haven’t even bothered to master your very simple task of learning to read and write. I know this sounds so rude the things I’m saying, and I guess that’s the way it is becuase, quite frankly, the things you have said, offend me profoundly. My grandparents never had any of the things you’ve tossed away as if your parents are jerks for GIVING THEM TO YOU.
  
  so, hon, go read a few more books, go learn a few more grammar lessons, go learn the difference between “money” and “greed” and then come back and write the essay you intended to. Again, I know I sound snippy and mean, but apparently no one has ever bothered to ask of you more than you are willing to give at a whim.
  
  If you want to be hard core, scary, punk rock, hippie, deep girl, go learn to form a sentence that says what you mean and means what you say.
  
  The Ramones managed to do it, and they took the subway to their gigs.
  
  Martin Luther King Jr managed to do it, and he lived in a world where most schools would have kicked him out. (and not begged him to accept the $41k edcuation you have)
  
  Bob Dylan, talk about hippies, this guy inspired a planet full of them. and he mumbled, but his songs still resonate today.
  
  I totally dig it that your parents are weirdos who let money get in the way of the happiness. by ALL MEANS, complain about that. But complain about THAT. It’s just one little thing. don’t go around say “we all” this or “you all” that or “no one needs money” It’s insulting and beneath you. I say all this because you can do much better, and this was a lazy, C+ effort.

  and then give yourself a little time to realize that you are the sort of person who knows what you like in a woman and be glad you don’t have to waste your time figuring that out! TRUST ME, there are too many people in this world who spend decades on that one! :D
  
  If you never hear from here again, then it wasn’t meant to be. If you do hear from her, it doesn’t mean it was meant to be. What is meant to be is that you learn to take chances with your heart and learn that it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get precisely what you want from it.
  
  But don’t languish too long over this girl, because you may have made the right choice in just enjoying and admiring her from afar. Don’t let yourself miss the boat when the next witty, pretty, funny woman comes along!

  tzubake, here’s the thing about our firsts: they will always hold a supreme spot in our hearts. You don’t remember your first steps as a baby, but I doubt you’ve ever thought ‘dude…I just walked across the room. THAT IS AWESOME!’ but it doesn’t make your ability to walk any less precious.
  
  With love, it’s different. You will always remember your first love. The good news is, you will always remain very aware “dude, I’m in love again. THAT IS AWESOME!” The cool thing about love is that it never stops being your favorite thing. The miserable thing about love? it never stops being your favorite thing.
  
  You will always love this woman in the same way you love her now. What I’m trying to say is that you will love another woman in a whole other way, and that will be wonderful and satisfying and gleeful in its own right. Don’t worry about getting over her. That just happens when it happens. Don’t force yourself to date other women. You’ll be somewhere, someday, and this woman will be talking, and you won’t help but to notice that she’s funny and smart and pretty. and then you’ll panic and think she’ll break your heart, and she’ll likely slip away.
  
  But THEN another time, in another month, yet another woman will be funny and smart and you won’t be able to help yourself but to tell her how much you love dogs or Monet or Duck Soup, or whatever you love in this world. and you’ll be terrified, and so will she, and you’ll both be like the rest of us. Two idiots, afraid of this world, who are brave enough to try anyway. Ah, life. You big, fat, annoying ball of annoying. what would we do without you?

  heh, don’t leave the country just yet! it does suck to feel awkward about something, but it’s also quite satisfying to face it head on.
  
  I suggest that you don’t seek him out and if you do run into him again and he starts making these comments, you flat out tell him how awkward it makes you feel.
  
  Sometimes we give an incident way more power than it deserves by not just standing up to it, giving it a name and telling the person about it.

  Don’t you want to have a bunch of fun stories to share with him when he’s back? Don’t you want to have a bunch of fun stories to share even if he never comes back?
  
  At best, it’s a short life, my dear. I certainly empathize with the relative misery of missing the one you love.
  
  Make a list of things you want to do, things you would do if he wasn’t your boyfriend (not like “kiss a bunch of boys” or anything!) but fun stuff like see 3 new bands, read 3 books you’ve heard about, see 3 movies on the AFI best films of all time list, twice a week do some new exercise, learn to make 3 new recipes, and then write a poem on the 7th day of each week.
  
  But don’t sit around and miss him and only be able to say “uh, Fritos are really good with chili” when he gets home!
