raninaon's Top (1) Replies by other users' votesI have to differ with AmandaLynn just a bit. I am 51 years old and just broke up with my “manfriend” of 14 years. I am a mature, professional business woman and can take care of myself. I think I have made mature dating choices and I think that I have dating wisdom, else I wouldn’t have had a 14-year relationship with this man. Be yourself? I have been myself for a long time. He has seen me in the worst situations as well as the best. The magic myth she projects (Just be yourself, be confident, comforable with and appreciative of who you are, and Mr. Right will just show up) sounds nice, but in reality, things (good and bad) sometimes just happen. You don’t always get an explanation, though of course, you want one.
Breakups of long-term relationships are always devastating when you are blind-sided by them, no matter how old and mature you are. A part of you is lost that you will never get back. For better or worse, your only choice is to evaluate your situation and move on. It is not an easy thing to do, but it is necessary if you don’t want to fall into a long and deep abyss of depression. I know what I’m talking about because I am going through it right now and I am drawing on all my inner strength to get through it.
If you feel that you need help to handle this and you don’t have a support network to be with you when you need them (like family or friends, and people who understand you), please see a therapist at least a couple times. They can help you work through your pain in a constructive manner.
