2008-06-20 19:40:20 on Looks like I’m going to stop smoking.
Looks like you are making a wise decision! I stopped many years ago and I now can’t stand the sight of a smelly cigarette. Best of luck in your attempt! with willpower you will achieve it.
2008-06-20 19:36:26 on ok then..favorite movies?
The Secret Life of Words starring Tim Robbins and Sarah Polley - Amazing acting from both, touching subject, eery landscapes and a movie that makes you think about lots of issues.
Code 46 - Beautiful! I have watched it several times and I keep discovering something new in it.
The Notebook - Do men like Noah really exist? I for one wish they did :)
Garden State - Natalie Portman plays one of the quirkiest female characters on cinema history and Zach’s debut as a director amazes me.
I love watching horror movies too and I am a big fan of the Cube trilogy.
2008-06-20 19:05:26 on Do you have a thing for short story collections?
Oh yes Kipling! You are absolutely right. I need to rediscover him.
2008-06-20 19:03:40 on Do you have a thing for short story collections?
Thanks for mentioning those Seven Spaces! never heard of them (what an ignorant…) so I am going to check them out. I would recommend you ‘Poachers’ by Tom Franklin, ‘The Interpreter of Maladies’ by Jhumpa Lahiri and ‘Glasgow Kiss: an anthology of new writing from Glasgow’.
Some beautiful and great stories in all of them.
Enjoy the reading! :)
2008-06-20 18:58:56 on Basque language… impossible to learn?
It is totally unrelated, that’s right but I got asked because not everybody seems to know it and they probably thought a native Spanish speaker would also be fluent in Basque language (highly unlikely unless the person was born in either the Basque country or Navarra, the neighbouring region).
I already translate into / from Galician which is supposed to be also a smallish market but it isn’t.
2008-06-20 18:55:53 on I’m looking for a good book to read - I like it all.
Drinking coffee elsewhere by ZZ Packer is great!
2008-06-20 18:51:28 on Basque language… impossible to learn?
Commander Iraki,
Quite a few US publishing houses have started releasing books by Basque authors in translation, one of them the Basque award-winning poet Kirmen Uribe (Graywolf Press) and being fluent in Spanish, I have been approached on a number of occasions by agencies asking me if I could do work for them in Basque as well.
Even Oxford University has a section dedicated to the language and many other universities worldwide so it is not spoken by many people but it’s certainly becoming popular due to its rich literature :-)
2008-06-20 18:46:42 on Recently I sent for a Prince Edward Island holiday brochure and I fell in love with the pics on it.
I will make sure to visit the beaches Breaking the Silence, thanks for the tip! :-)

I am glad my post brought back good memories of your family trip Anon :-) It really sounds lovely the way you have described the place, thanks for sharing it with me.
I only discovered the author of ‘Anne of Greene Gables’ children’s book was born there recently and I am not surprised she got inspired to write in such surroundings!
2008-06-20 18:42:28 on I am trying to find a penfriend around my age (30)
Ehm… no. I maybe did not read the FAQ properly before signing up mas1s. I thought post would be permanently on the website so that’s why I posted them all at once, thinking ‘OK maybe one will be answered this week and others sometime in the near future’. I did not think people joined this website to get instant results. At least I did not.

Elysium87,
I joined with my other email address but was later told the profile link had expired so I had to sign up again. Strange… as it happened within minutes and profiles are not supposed to expire after 24 hours if not verified.

Hi mas1! thanks for explaining me that thing about knocking off 3 other people from the front page; it was not my intention. I joined half an hour ago.
I do think though that the questions are all too different to put them all together in one post (I mean NYC, languages, Prince Edward Island etc… not much in common and very unlikely someone will know about all these things).
2008-06-20 18:15:24 on Basque language… impossible to learn?
Honest but harsh reply. I adore learning languages but adding Basque to my resumé in my line of work would mean better job prospects so it is a mix of both: genuine interest and increasing my likelihood to keep on paying the bills every month :-)
2008-06-20 18:12:29 on Ok, anyone else learning Finnish?
Hei! I would recommend you to post an advert for a language exchange in http://www.gumtree.com (I think you live in the UK, right?). You will surely get some replies from Finnish people and can meet up to practice your conversational skills in the language. Best of luck!
Try also putting an advert on your city’s local university. It might work as well as there must be some Erasmus students from that country every year.
